Oscars statuettes from '30s, '40s auctioned in LA

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Fifteen Academy Awards statuettes from the 1930s and '40s, including the Best Screenplay Oscar given to Herman Mankiewicz for "Citizen Kane," have been sold at a Los Angeles auction.

Auction house Nate D. Sanders said Tuesday that the sales totaled more than $3 million.

Mankiewicz's 1941 award sold for $588,455, more than double its auction price from 1999.

The 1941 Best Picture award, for "How Green Was My Valley," went for $274,520. It was last sold in 2004 for $95,600.

A statuette for "Cavalcade," 1933's Best Picture, brought in $332,165.

Other Oscars on the block were Ronald Colman's 1947 Best Actor award for "A Double Life" and Charles Coburn's Best Supporting Actor statuette for "The More the Merrier" in 1943.

I had always been under the impression that it was illegal to sell Oscars...

Since 1950, the Academy has required Oscar winners to sign an agreement stipulating that neither they--nor their heirs--will sell their statuettes without first offering to sell them back to the Academy for $1. But that agreement doesn't cover any of the Oscars awarded between 1929-1949.

The academy has the first right of refusal to buy them back for one-dollar. I find it hard to believe they didn't buy Citizen Kane, How Green Was My Valley and Cavalcade back though.

They only have that option with Oscars awarded post-1950. The agreement wasn't in effect until then.

So what, who cares. Why don't you go ask Nikki Minaj to perform for you too. All of the awards shows are run by "enemies", people who support dictators (Chavez) get awards. May you all burn in hell along with your families.

It's so odd to me that someone would spend all that money to own someone else's award.

I just hope the auctioneer ended each one with, "And the Oscar goes to ________ " Saying "And the winner is ________ " just wouldn't be respectful to all the bidders.
