In a report from VH1's Fab Life, Academy Award-winning actress Natalie Portman has chosen a name for her new baby boy. Portman and fiance Benjamin Millepied welcomed their son, Alef, on June 14th according to People Magazine, but kept quiet about their name selection. Portman, the 2011 Best Actress winner for "Black Swan," is not the only award winning mom picking an unusual name for her baby. She is in good company with several other recent Oscar winners, Gwyneth and Halle to name a few, who have given their children unique names. Here are five other celebrity mothers that have chosen one-of-a-kind first names for their kids:
Gwyneth Paltrow, Child: Apple Blythe Alison Martin
Paltrow herself grew up with famous parents (Director Bruce Paltrow and actress Blythe Danner), so it wasn't a surprise she chose an unusual name for her daughter. AOL's ParentDish reported that Paltrow and husband Chris Martin (frontman of the band Coldplay) named their daughter Apple in 2004, because Martin suggested it and Paltrow thought Apple created mental images of sweetness and cleanliness. In 2006, the couple named their son Moses, after a song Martin wrote for Paltrow. She was the 1999 Best actress winner for "Shakespeare in Love."
Halle Berry, Child: Nahla Ariela Aubry
Berry welcomed daughter Nahla with her then-boyfriend, model Gabriel Aubry in 2008. Berry told "Access Hollywood" she and Aubry hadn't chosen a name for their daughter until right before they left the hospital. Nahla means "honeybee" in Arabic. Berry won the Oscar for "Monster's Ball" in 2001.
Julia Roberts, Children: Hazel Patricia Moder and Phinnaeus Walter Moder
Twins Hazel and Phinnaeus, Roberts' first children, were born to Roberts and cameraman husband Danny Moder in 2004. Hazel and Phinnaeus's younger brother, Henry, born in 2007, lucked out with a more common name. Roberts won the Oscar for her title role in "Erin Brockovich" in 2000.
Helen Hunt, Child: Makena Lei Gordon Carnahan
Born in 2004, Makena is Hunt's daughter with longtime boyfriend Matthew Carnahan. Best known for her role on the NBC sitcom "Mad About You," Hunt's real life daughter fared better in the name department than her television daughter, who was called Mabel. Hunt won the 1997 Best Actress award for "As Good As It Gets."
Nicole Kidman, Child: Sunday Rose Kidman Urban
During Kidman's 10+ year marriage to Tom Cruise, the couple adopted two children, Isabella and Connor. Kidman's first biological child, Sunday, was born in 2008. She told US Magazine around her daughter's second birthday that she and country singer husband Keith Urban chose Sunday because it was their favorite day of the week. Their second child, Faith, was born in 2010. Kidman received the 2002 Best Actress win for "The Hours."
