Oscar Buzz -- Notable Celebrity Dates of the Past

Who will step out together on the Red Carpet this year?

This year's Academy Awards show is the 84th such show and it should provide everyone with the proper dosages of wins, losses and surprises. Over the last 84 years there have been hundreds and hundreds of attendees and one of the traditions around Oscar night is to see who the stars bring as their dates. Over the years there have been plenty of other notable date choices, and this list hopes to tackle some of them.

Matt Stone and Trey Parker - In 2000, the creators of "South Park" were up for an Oscar in the Best Original Song category for "Blame Canada" from "South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut." What made this "couple" noteworthy though was their decision to wear two iconic dresses from Oscars past. Trey went in the green sheer dress that Jennifer Lopez turned heads in, while Matt wore the same pink dress Gwyneth Paltrow wore the year she won her Best Actress Oscar.

Ellen DeGeneres and Anne Heche - It may be hard to believe, but as recently as 1999 a same-sex couple showing up to an awards show was still a monumental occasion. Yet that's precisely what happened when Ellen, who'd only been out of the closet for a short time, took actress Anne Heche to the Oscars. Heche herself had not come out fully, so the date was important for a couple of reasons.

Madonna and Michael Jackson - With Jackson's personal trials and tribulations still a couple years in the future, the joining of two pop icons in 1991 made headlines. The Material Girl's was there to sing a song from "Dick Tracy," which won, and The King of Pop was Madonna's guest.

Michael Jackson and Brooke Shields - It was a coupling so surprising that Eddie Murphy actually made a joke referencing Shields and MJ attending the Oscars together in his special, "Raw." It's hard to say if this this sort of date would even happen in this day and age, considering Brooke was all of 15-years-old and Jackson was 22 in 1981 when the two strutted down the red carpet together.

Angelina Jolie and James Haven - In 2000 Angelina had just split with Billy Bob Thornton and hadn't quite landed in Brad's arms yet. So who was the next logical choice for her date that year's Oscars? Her brother of course. How sweet, right? Well, it would've been sweet if the two didn't display some oddly intimate looking PDA on the red carpet. During her acceptance speech for Best Supporting Actress she also thanked James as well.

Drew Barrymore and Corey Feldman - In 1989 Drew Barrymore was 14-years-old and her boyfriend and date to the Oscars that year was only 18-years-old himself. Corey's career was at an all-time high that year, and Drew was just starting to re-emerge into the spotlight after her personal struggles. Alas, the couple didn't last long, but for the sheer fact that both stars were so young, their appearance at the Oscars together is worth noting.

Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, and Their Moms - In 1998 the Bostonian brethren were up for an Oscar for writing the screenplay for their film, "Good Will Hunting." Still pretty fresh on the scene, the pair decided to take their mothers to the event, though either could have had their pick from any number of A-list starlets at the time.

Nicole Kidman and Naomi Watts - There weren't any intimations of romance between the two ladies when they arrived on the red carpet together in 2007. Nicole and Naomi are actually just very close friends, and decided to attend the awards together. One thing's for sure, they definitely won the award for Most Gorgeous Platonic Couple that year.
