BURBANK, Calif. -- MySpace Records newcomer Mateo once interviewed for a consulting job in New York, and his interviewer was none other than John Legend.

Mateo didn't get the job, and obviously, John Legend is no longer a hiring manager at a consulting firm. These days, John is becoming a music legend for our time, and Mateo is an exciting young artist on the verge of stardom.

Mateo's appeal is already reminiscent to John Legend but he also brings to mind Maxwell mixed with a little Coldplay. This is a fair comparison, but his songwriting and style is definitely original and fresh. The first hit, "Complicated," showcases his soulful and fresh sound to a song for which you can't help but feel the vibe.

I recently got a chance to see Mateo perform while he opened for Bad Boy's 'Day 26' and Capitol Records artist J' Holiday. He's the real deal. Mateo's stage presence and swag are incredible, and his vocals are the farthest thing from needing auto tune.
