Mitchell cracked up judges on Wednesday with his campy performance of "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going."
Laughter aside, Simon Cowell - who called the performance "one of the most atrocious performances we've ever had" - said he "prayed for about five or six hours non-stop" that Mitchell wouldn't advance. "Me and God have a good relationship now!" Cowell quipped.

Meanwhile, three more advanced on the show: Allison Iraheta, 16; Kris Allen, 23; and Adam Lambert, 26, who "thought Nick was hilarious, so I didn't know what was gonna happen" when it came to the elimination.
They will join Danny Gokey, 28; Alexis Grace, 21; Michael Sarver, 27, who were selected as the first three finalists last week.

Next Tuesday, 12 more semifinalists will vie for three spots in the competition's top 12.
Mitchell's dancing days -- and those of the other dismissed semifinalists -- may not be over: After the first nine finalists are selected by viewer votes, the judges will pick the last three finalists following a special wild card round.
