Nicole Richie says she and Joel Madden will tie the knot "eventually."

"I think for both of us, we are going to do it because we want to, not because that's what you do," Nicole - who is pregnant with the couple's second baby - said on Larry King Live Thursday. "And he's making an album right now and I've got my own thing going on, and we're going to do it when the time's right."

Madden - who called Nicole "an awesome girl" and his "best friend" -- also said they'll wed "one day."

Added the rocker, "We're really focused on our family, and we feel like we already feel kind of married, you know? We have a great our family system that we have down we feel like this is a real family and marriage, one day it will come."

Nicole's father Lionel Richie also wants them "to take their time."

He said he knows people who wed spontaneously "and they broke up five minutes later. I like the idea of 'take your time, get it right,' because you have kids in common.

"I'm more interested in whether they like each other and whether they're best friends," he explained. "Because that means they'll be great parents forever."

Nicole said it is remarkable that her dad feels that way since most parents want their children to wed if they have kids.

"Joel's family is actually they are very Christian, from Maryland and Joel grew up very Christian and even his idea when he was little was I am going to get married and then I am going to have kids and then very programmed but that's the order that everything happens in," said Nicole, who welcomed daughter Harlow in 2008.

"And, of course, when I was a little girl, you dream about getting married and that is definitely a dream of mine one day," she went on. "Right now we're really, really focused on our family. We're focused on our foundation, and as far as feeling that need of commitment, we both really have that in each other."

Nicole said her father even calls Madden "son." Added Nicole, "We call each other's parents our in-laws."

As for whether she's expecting a boy or girl, she said, "We want the surprise.... I'll get the clothes after."

Her father Lionel is hoping for a grandson.

"Joel and I are having powwows," he said. Replied Nicole, "You should hear them prepping each other."

I hate when people try to force their beliefs on other people. If they don't want to get married that is up to them. The most important thing is that they are great parents first and foremost.

Well, I think that its great that they are just doing what feel right to them. There are comments on here that a bit out of line. The bible comment :( ...it would be worst if they were to get a divorce because of pressure which in return is worst for the kids in the long run...I think.

marniejones can suck it. get with the times. dont push your bible on people, its ignorant. if people are happy these days and responsible about their offspring its a step forward. i can only imagine what marniejones thinks of the gay mariage issue. is that in the bible, too?

Look at what they are already teaching their kids... Why not make it legal if they are "already" married? When the time is right?! That is a crock. God intended marriage between a man and woman and the relationship to be pure until married. Do they want their kids having kids with whoever outside of marriage?! There is an order for a reason NICOLE! Read the BIBLE!!!

They seem like such a cute family. She has really changed the impression the world had on her. Glad to see how mature she has become and she really seems like a great mom. Too bad Paris will never grow up! No need to hurry down the isle. It's the commitment from each other that makes it work, not the piece of paper.
