Nicki Manaj, the 25-year-old female rapper, born in Trinidad but raised in Jamaica, Queens, New York, flaunts her big boobs and big hips proudly. No skin and bones for this bootylicious singer who may make people say, "Lady Gaga who?" Minaj, who was signed by Lil Wayne and who has worked with Usher, Mariah Carey, Trey Songz, among others, writes her own material and has a debut album, Pink Friday, that hits the public November 23. You can currently hear Nicki Minaj as a guest singer on Bottoms Up with Trey Songz. The girl who once worked at Red Lobster saved up enough money for studio time, and the rest is history.
Is Lady Gaga straight, gay or bisexual? The same can be asked of Nicki Minaj who likes to autograph the breasts of her female fans. "I don't mind being called a weirdo," says Minaj. "There are a lot of people in hip-hop who are probably never going to get what I do. But, by just being myself, I end up touching a lot more people who might never have paid much attention to a female rapper." Hip hop is not known for celebrating sexual diversity, but Nicki Minaj, the first female hip hop artist since 2003 to hit number 1 on Billboard's top rap singles chart, has the potential to change that.
But does she want to? "I started making it my business to say things that would empower women, like, 'Where my bad bitches at?' to let them know, 'I'm here for you. Then, when I started going to the shows and it was nothing but girls, it was like, Did I go too far with embracing my girls? Because now they want to kiss and hug me."
Is Minaj into girls? "I don't date women and I don't have sex with women. But I don't date men either." Yet Minaj has no problem rapping about lesbian conquests, "And I only stop for pedestrians, or real real bad lesbians," she raps in Go Hard. In the end, Minaj leaves you guessing, just like Gaga. Minaj just wants to be Minaj.
Women can't get enough of her and gay men love her. But hip hop is kinder to the boys than the girls, and they say that the shelf life for female rappers is less than two years. Will Minaj taste good after her expiration date?
So what's a Harajuku Barbie? Harajuku is an area around the Japan's Harajuku train station. Harajuku is a Japanese style, full of bright colors and unique designers, adopted by young people. One look at Harajuku style and you can see how it appeals to a Nicki Minaj. "The way they dress is the way I am on the inside," says Minaj. Nicki Minaj wanted to merge the two words together - Harajuku Barbie - because all girls love Barbie and all girls want to play dress up.
