Nick Jonas confirmed via Twitter recently that he is being considered as a judge on "American Idol" to replace the exiting Steven Tyler. Given the current slant on these competition shows for younger, poppier judges, Jonas may be a good choice. After all, when "The X Factor" returns in September, not only will the panel feature Britney Spears, but sitting next to her will be Demi Lovato. If young and poppy is what they are looking for, who else might be in the running? Here's a list of teen idols they may want to consider.
1. Nick Jonas
Jonas is an excellent candidate for "AI" judge. Despite his young age of 19 (he'll turn 20 this month) he has been performing professionally since the age of nine, when he appeared on Broadway in "Annie Get Your Gun." Most recently Nick finished a five-month stint as Finch in "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying." And this experience on The Great White Way is more and more relevant as the number of "Idol" contestants who make it to the New York stage is increasing from Constantine Maroulis and Clay Aiken to Anthony Fedorov and Todrick Hall, "Idol" needs to keep an eye towards Broadway dreams.
2. Selena Gomez
If the "Idol" producers don't choose Jonas maybe they should consider his ex-girlfriend Selena Gomez. "The Wizards of Waverly Place" star is known worldwide now, thanks in some small part, to superstar boyfriend Justin Bieber. But Gomez is a talented and successful singer in her own right. She and her band, Selena & the Scene, have had three albums hit the top 10 of the Billboard 200 since 2009.
Of course if "AI" wants a pop idol perhaps they should shoot for the stars and go after Bieber himself. No one knows more about rising to stardom in record time than the kid who was discovered on YouTube only to become a worldwide singing sensation. He might have a pointer or two for the "Idol" hopefuls.
Okay, so Pattinson's not a singer and he may not be qualified to judge them, but neither was Ellen DeGeneres and they put her on the panel. But R-Patz has had a rough few weeks and maybe could use a distraction. Why not travel around the country looking for the next pop idol? It could take his mind off his troubles.
5. Miley Cyrus
Now that Cyrus is all grown up and engaged at the age of 19 to Liam Hemsworth, maybe it's time for her to be back on TV. Cyrus has been surrounded by music all life with not only her own "Hannah Montanna" based career but also through watching her dad Billy Ray Cyrus in the business. "Idol" might be the perfect spot for Cyrus to prove she is embracing her adulthood.
Watch for season 12 of "American Idol" when it premieres in January on Fox to see if Nick Jonas makes the cut.
