Model Maggie Rizer loves her dogs so much that she made one of those pups the subject of her personal blog, Bea Makes Three. Sadly, the family is back down to two dogs after Bea tragically died of heatstroke aboard a United Airlines flight from Newark to San Francisco.
"Two weeks ago, on our way back to San Francisco after a great summer vacation on the east coast, Beatrice lost her life due to the negligence of United Airlines," Rizer wrote. "I'm writing this with my anger aside, in the hopes that someone looking for advice will read this and not make the mistake of trusting United with their pets as we did."
She goes on to describe the events that led up to the sad death of her two-year-old Golden retriever.
"Please don't make the mistake I made that cost our dog her life," she closed. "Please, don't trust that an airline will truly care and provide safety to your beloved pet."
So horribly sad. Losing a pet is never easy, but losing one to tragic circumstances just makes it all the more heartbreaking. Don't believe it? Just ask these celebs.
Jessica Simpson may be the mom of a human now, but her first "child" was her malti-poo pup given to her by ex-husband Nick Lachey. Tragically, Simpson lost her tiny pooch when coyotes snapped her up outside her Hollywood home in 2009.
"My heart is broken because a coyote took my precious Daisy right in front of our eyes. HORROR!" she tweeted at the time.
The singer offered a reward for the return of her Daisy, but it was sadly not meant to be.
Though they weren't together, Lachey admitted he was really sad about the loss of his ex-wife's dog.
"I think a lot of people forget that Daisy was my dog too -- for years," he told Access Hollywood at the time.
Martha Stewart was devastated when her beloved dog, Ghengis Khan, was killed in a tragic kennel accident back in 2009. According to reports, an employee was filling a propane tank at the Pennsylvania kennel when it exploded. Stewarts' dog was one of 16 that perished in the blaze.
"I am deeply saddened by THIS STORY," she wrote on her blog at the time. "My heart goes out to Karen Tracy and I am hoping for a speedy recovery for those (both pets and humans) injured in this terrible event."
Brings tears to our eyes just thinking about it!
It's no secret that Oprah Winfrey is a fan of dogs: She had two cocker spaniels -- Sophie and Solomon -- for years before they died of old age. The talk show queen tried to ease her wounds by getting two new puppy cockers, but one died almost instantly from parvovirus.
"I'm saddened by his passing, though we only had him for a weekend," Winfrey said in a statement after baby Ivan died in 2009. Littermate Sadie also had the disease but managed to survive.
What's worse? It wasn't the first time Winfrey went through such a tragedy. In 2007, her Golden retriever Gracie died at age two after choking on a plastic ball.
"Her life was a gift to me," Winfrey wrote at the time. "Her death, a greater one."
