LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Michael J. Fox is applauding President Barack Obama's recent executive order overturning the ban on federal funding for research involving human embryonic stem cells.

"Today is a new day. I could not be more thrilled to see President Obama live up to his commitment to get politics out of science. We have seen, for the past eight years, how much damage the opposite approach has done to science and patients," Fox said in a statement released to Access Hollywood.

"Now that the President has taken this critical action, I am excited by the prospect of American scientists carrying human embryonic stem cell research forward toward better treatments and cures that will affect countless millions of lives," the actor continued.

Fox, who has been battling Parkinson's disease for 16 years, said he sees more hope in the fight against Parkinson's with Obama in the White House.

"I commend the President for recognizing the inherent value of scientific freedom, and for helping to create an environment in which it can flourish," he added.

The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research has raised nearly $140 million to date, for research in combating the disease.

Stem cells can be obtained from an adults bone marrow. This has been successful. Why must we kill a baby in order to perform experiments? What if, down the road, someone believes we should harvest adult stem cells? Should a selected group of people be murdered in order to test his hypothesis? I recommend you read the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution from beginning to end.

You people that are healthy, need to walk, if possible, just one day in the shoes of the many that could be helped by a cure for Parkinson's, etc. None of this will really matter until you or someone you care about needs a cure.

I see that by using money to keep us safe at home still irks some dimocraps. Wonder boy has wasted more money in his short time in office than both the wars have cost so far. Look how long the military police had to stay in New Orleans to maintain law and order. 3YEARS. what about that money in a state??????????

It seems odd that the people complaining about funds for developing cures for diseases are the same people that thought it was o k to waste billions of dollars bombing Iraq then spending billions more to rebuild...not to mention that the civilian lives lost there didn't do anything to help move us forward medically or any other way..

JennieLynn, I guess abortion is not killing babies either????? Too bad, do your research about what they can use instead of stem cells. Economy and jobs first. Let non profits keep supporting stem cell research not the government.

KM: I didn't want my taxdollars funding the Iraq War. Nor to fund socialized medicine for Republican Congressmen and senators that don't want any of the rest of us to have it.

It always amazes me that there are still so many ignorant peple inthe world. Do some research on stem cell research to see how it all works before you accuse people of killing babies. That is not what is done. I hope you, your children, or your grandchildren never have a disease that could have been cured by stem cell research. It would be too bad for you. Grace L reread your comment.

StreetPeaches-you should really watch how you talk about God. You really sound kinda nutty yourself! I don't agree with the Government funding it. As a tax payer I don't want my money funding things like this. Our country is up to it's eyeballs in debt and Obama just keeps on dissing out money.
