LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Meryl Streep is about to take on an important new role - mother-in-law!

According to numerous reports, actress Mamie Gummer, Meryl Streep's daughter, is engaged to fellow actor Ben Walker.

People reported that Ben asked for Mamie's hand in marriage in very traditional way - on one knee.

"Yeah, he sure did," the 25-year-old actress told People on Monday night at the annual Whitney Gala in NYC, adding that her entire family, including mom Meryl and sculptor dad Don Gummer, are delighted with the news. "They're all very happy ... we're very, very smiley."

Mamie - whose birth name is Mary Willa - told the mag that Ben, 27, popped the question on Sunday. The actress was seen wearing a reportedly modest engagement ring and the location of the ring's origin remains a mystery - even to the bride!

"He had it made somewhere," she explained. "He won't tell me where, so I doubt he will tell you."

The couple reportedly met while starring in 2008's "Dangerous Liaisons" on Broadway.

"He was the Keanu to my Uma," she said. "We were kind of pals first. It was a drawn-out thing."
