As if waging a faux war between Jennifer Aniston and Angelina Jolie over the increasingly bedraggled Brad Pitt weren't enough for the tabloids, the hot story this week has the two women competing over who wore their respective black dresses best to recent showbiz shindigs.
Radar Online's headline blasted "Red Carpet Style Showdown! Jennifer Aniston Vs. Angelina Jolie" while the Daily Mail's title teased, "Anything you can do! Jennifer Aniston shows Angelina Jolie how to work a little black dress at the Directors Guild Awards in Hollywood."
The gist of both stories is the two women are still waging a secret war over whose life has turned out better since Aniston's ex-husband deserted her for his "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" co-star. The battle over the black dresses is only the most recent alleged skirmish in this seven-year war.
This latest contest started when the "Salt" star wore a Michael Kors black gown with a thigh-high slit and lace panels to the Producers Guild Awards ceremony in Beverly Hills on January 21.
Not to be outdone, the girl-next-door "Friends" star rocked a strapless Dolce & Gabbana black-beaded mini-dress that showed off her sculpted arms and legs to the Directors Guild Awards ceremony in Hollywood a week later.
The next night, Jolie showed up at the Screen Actors Guild awards ceremony in a black Jenny Packham halter gown with a sexy open back.
Whether the pouty lipped actress or walking shampoo ad looked better in her respective black dress depends largely on whether one is Camp Angie or Camp Jen. Armed with a battalion of stylists, neither female looked exactly frumpy in her frock. Still, that didn't stop some people from trying to pick a winner.
"Jennifer looks fresh and healthy and happy. Angelina looks like Morticia . . . sullen, not sexy," wrote an Aniston ally.
"Aniston looks like Dustin Hoffman in a wig," a Jolie supporter snarked.
The red carpet, of course, is just the latest battlefield in an ongoing rivalry kept alive by tabloid reporters with an insatiable appetite for drama. One is led to believe the two women wake up each morning and Google each other to see what her competition is up to.
In addition to who looks better, the two women are reportedly in competition over their careers. Both expanded out of their actress roles in 2011 making their directorial debuts -- Jolie in the movie "In the Land of Blood and Honey," which she also allegedly wrote, and Aniston in "Five," a made-for-TV Lifetime film about breast cancer survivors.
Ultimately, the battle comes down to the holy grail, Brad Pitt, who is currently in the possession of Jolie. Some fans suggest that even though Jolie has won that battle, she may have lost the war, suggesting "Benjamin Button's" ex-wife is more content with her current prize, Justin Theroux.
