It's the 50th anniversary of Marilyn Monroe's death. The actress born Norma Jeane Mortenson was the predecessor to modern sex symbols like Sofia Vergara, Halle Berry, Salma Hayek, Angelina Jolie and Olivia Wilde. Monroe combined her killer curves with an often underrated sense of brilliant comedic timing. Monroe's peers included a stable of sexy actresses and performers such as Sophia Loren, Jane Russell, Lena Horne, Dorothy Dandridge, Raquel Welch and Ursula Andress.
Although fifty years have passed, Marilyn the bombshell is gone but she is definitely not forgotten. One need only hit up Anytown, USA around Halloween or even prom time to find doppelgangers rocking versions of her epic white dress from "The Seven Year Itch." Hollywood also makes sure that one of their favorite daughters is often remembered with films, fashion and with song references. Singer Mariah Carey even named her baby daughter "Monroe" after the late actress.
So, how have other celebs paid tribute to the "Some Like It Hot" star?
LiLo has been very candid about her Marilyn obsession. Her recent Playboy Magazine spread paid homage to MM but that wasn't the first time Lindsay evoked Marilyn. Linds also recreated Marilyn's final Vogue spread in a 2008 New York Magazine photoshoot. In addition, Lindsay's clothing company is named "6126" after Marilyn's date of birth, June 1st, 1926.
Of course, Michelle was paid to channel Marilyn in the biopic, "My Week With Marilyn." The "Dawson's Creek" actress wore padded curves to recreate Marilyn's iconic Coca-Cola bottle figure. The film is based on filmmaker Colin Clark's memoirs. Clark was assistant director on the classic Monroe movie "The Prince and The Showgirl."
Megan had a full blown Marilyn tribute tattoo on her right forearm. The starlet later felt that it was "negative" and had it removed. She showed off the fading tat earlier this year on Jay Leno's "Tonight Show" sofa. Megan confessed to Jay that the tattoo removal was extremely painful.
Fifty years later, Marilyn-mania shows no signs of slowing down. Stars like Madonna, Anna Nicole Smith and Paris Hilton dressed up as Monroe for dramatic effect at various times. Rapper Nicki Minaj made a tribute song named "Marilyn Monroe." Singer Rihanna even commissioned an exclusive Swarovski crystal Marilyn portrait. Then, there's the hit TV series "Smash" that is basically a full-on weekly tribute to the star.
So, what do you think? Did we leave any Marilyn obsessed stars off of the list?
