Award winning singer, songwriter, record producer, and diva extraordinaire Mariah Carey will officially be joining "American Idol" as a judge, Fox confirmed today.
The singer reportedly took the call of Fox entertainment chief Kevin Reilly today on speaker phone to confirm the deal saying, " I am so excited to be joining 'Idol'... I wish I could have been there myself to tell you but this all kind of just happened. I can't wait to get started."
We think this is great news and hopefully Mariah will be able to boost the show's ratings with her superstar presence. We're super excited to welcome Mimi to the show and we think she's going to be an awesome judge. Here's a few reasons why.
Seasoned Music Veteran
Mariah was only 18 when she was signed to Sony, releasing her first hit album in 1990. The release of her debut album was just the first of a decade string of hits including everything from "Emotions" to "Dreamlover" to "Fantasy" and beyond. After Mariah divorced Sony CEO Tommy Mottola in 1998 her career took a tumble with weak record sales, a "Glitter" bomb, and deteriorating health. It looked like it was the end of the pop star's career but she proved in 2005 she was stronger than ever when she released her Grammy award winning album, "The Emancipation of Mimi." Mariah continues to have hits and with her experience, both good and bad, in the industry we know she'll be able to give hopeful young talents on "Idol" real advice on what being an entertainer is all about.
Fun and Goofy Personality
Mariah fans know what a goofball the singer can be and her sense of humor will be appreciated among the nervous contestants on the show. After all she has been through Mariah loves to poke fun at herself and show that making music doesn't have to be so serious. We think her fun personality will bring back viewers to the show when they see the diva is much more down to earth than they think.
Chemistry With the Other Judges
Randy Jackson has been with Mariah since she was a young teenager starting out in the music business playing bass for her in her early band. (You can catch him on stage with her back in the early '90s on "SNL" here .) Randy is also Mariah's manager and since the two are long time friends we know these two will have fun judging the show together with whatever third judge is picked. Hopefully, when the next judge is announced they can mesh well with Mariah and Randy's personalities and extended history together.
Do you think Mariah will make a good judge on "Idol?" Let's here about it!
