Madonna's Half-Time Show Gets Mixed Reviews

Madonna Calls M.I.A. Bird-flipping 'Teenager' Move

While the New York Giants and New England Patriots are on the field, the focus is on the polarized end zones. During the Half-Time Show, Madonna gave the 50 yard line some "luvin'."

The Best & Worst Super Bowl Halftime Moments

The Material Girl struck a pose in a Gladiator-themed opening number for Vogue. Holding true to her promise of no "wardrobe malfunctions," Madonna's outfits were quite conservative with no cleavage in sight.

The vintage performance then shifted gears with tracks from more recent years. Music boomed through the stadium. After a near-stumble on the steps in her high-heeled boots, Madonna made her way over to LMFAO for a mash-up with their smash-hit Party Rock Anthem. They then proceeded to center stage for some "shufflin'."

What would football be without cheerleaders? Madonna got on her rah-rah sis-boom-bah for a spirited routine of new single Give Me All Your Luvin'. Her squad included Nicki Minaj and M.I.A., with the latter appearing to have flipped the bird during the live nationally televised event.

Despite telling ET that he wouldn't be a surprise guest, the tight-lipped Cee Lo Green proudly led a marching band on stage. When the field was re-lit from going dark, Madonna and The Voice judge were donned in robes for a gospel rendition of Like a Prayer, complete with a choir as back-up.

In a puff of smoke, the most-likely lip-synching Madonna disappeared below the stage. Gold fairy dust was sprinkled on the field with the message of "World Peace" glistening on the gridiron.

Celebs have already shared mixed reactions on Twitter. Melissa Joan Hart critiqued, "If Madonna had worn some lower heels and moved a little smoother I would've thought it was perfect." Sherri Shepherd came to Madge's defense, tweeting, "I disagree with ya'll. I hope at 53 I can wear thigh high boots w heels, dance, flip & climb up stairs. #Madonna did her thing #superbowl."

Paula Abdul raved, "I was dancing &singing along w/ @CeeLoGreen #Madonna Like A Prayer was AWESOME! Well played #Superbowl WELL PLAYED-amazing #HalfTime show!" Donny Osmond echoed, "Madonna was really good thanks to some amazing production but it was @CeeloGreen and @NickiMinaj that made me love it. Still love Madonna!"

First Look: 'G.I. Joe' Super Bowl Spot

Piers Morgan was quite possibly the harshest in his reaction to Sharon Osbourne's review. "Queen of what? Lip-synching?," he tweeted after Mrs. O proclaimed, "Madonna is back! She's the queen. Just sensational!" Kelly Osbourne fought back, tweeting, "@piersmorgan why is it that you are no longer on AGT anymore? That's right you have no taste! It's ok I still love you! #IgnoranceIsBliss."

How about that dancer. Dancing on and then doing a back flip off a rope. That guy should get an award. Talk about performing under pressure.

The best part of Madonna's half-time show was her finale disappearing act, in a big puff of exhaust — and the World Peace message. Once she tottered on those stilt-heels, it set up apprehension of what might follow ... and the obvious lip-synching stank. I found the overly black costumery, and especially Madonna's getup, really tacky — like Halloween. I'd take a band of real musicians any day over the Madonna sideshow.

Her live shows are all flash with no substance or heart. Saw her live years ago and this half-time performance struck me the same way: technical aspects impressive and interesting, her actual performance wooden and without any heart or feeling. She seems unable to be spontaneous (or sing live), and it results in a technically efficient but emotionless show. Just as I left her live show without feeling anything, same here.

Was the meaning of the end of the show that if she vanishes from doing live stage shows World Peace will result? Hmmm... Had to laugh at that sudden vanishing at show's end and the resulting "World Peace." Considering her very public nastiness exhibited frequently lately (think gifted flowers and her sniping/jealous comments about Lady Gaga) it seems she needs to listen to her own preaching, and be kinder to her fellow humans, too. "World Peace" indeed, Madonna.

So...desiring World Peace means you can't be cranky, jealous or in a bad mood? What are you saying? Even Ghandi had awful moments does that make his accomplishments less impressive.

When asked, Madona spoke the truth (which MANY have already acknowledged), that Lady Gaga's music sounds a lot like hers.. It wasn't a jealous comment at all! Get a clue.. Jealous of what???? Madonna is the single most successful femal vocalist of all time! Jealous of Lady Gaga freak with 8 or 9 big hits?

Thought it was pretty good, but I wondered how all the beer drinking, football watching men at home and at the game enjoyed watching pretty boys dance around in skirts. Come on, Madonna, don't you think hot chicks in short skirts would have been much more entertaining for the boys. I think someone had a diva moment and thought if all eyes were to be on her, no hot girls allowed! Other than the two other women she sang with, of course.

NOT a worshiper here, remember her book Sex?? I could take the churchy stuff from someone like Faith Hill...but not McDonna! What scares me is, what it says about US!

"After a near-stumble on the steps in her high-healed boots" - criticism of Madonna's show by Paige Feigenbaum- Journalist (?) who not only saw a need for someone to cure the said boots of which a mere spell check to her own "article" wouldn't catch her gaffe...tsk tsk...halftime - anytime Madonna is a full time star.

Elthon John said: Madonna will need a good playback and she did... #lip-synched

In all fairness, she did do SOME live singing. Like a Prayer was totally sung live and a few parts of other songs. For example, when she stumbled going up the stairs on "Music" she also missed the line in the song. If she were lip synching it would have just played the line anyway, right? Duh! But other parts were definitely playback. When you're dancing that much you just can't sing live at the same time.

        Lady GaGa does.

        Beyonce does.

Lady Gaga and Beyonce lip sync part of the time too-ALL singers do it-duh

Someone has to say this: Madonna has a weak, weak voice. You can drop by any cocktail lounge and hear better singers. I challenge her to "sing" a few songs a capella-without the cast of thousands and see how she sounds. Just another example of extreme overproduction compensating for lack of talent
      • Norman 3 months ago
shes in the top 5 most commercially successful singers of all time-youre an imbecile
      • Bobby P 3 months ago
Never underestimate the taste of the general public. Oh, and Norman, learn how to punctuate, #$%$!!!!!!!

I thought the visual effects were great, but I hate this lipsinking stuff. Can't any performer sing for real, real time anymore...or are they just all fake....

Go see Lady Gaga you will hear every breath she takes between verses, She doesn't sound like an iPod being plugged.

Lady Gaga does lip synch and she copies Madonna!

OMG according to some comments on here people over 50 should lay down and die.

betty white would have been a better choice.

I thought she did great. Madonna does not sit behind a piano or stamd behind a guitar, she puts on a show. You would have to be superhumanly athletic to dance the way she does and sing...it is pretty hard to do.
      • Sgt. Pepper 3 months ago
        She was lip synching.
      • BillsXLVII 3 months ago
So you mean she's not a musician, but a performer. Ok.
      • Curioso 3 months ago
Hard to say because she can play the piano and the guitar which makes her a musician. Yes? Yet lipsynch's when she is also dancing which makes her by your standards a performer. The big question is how do you know she was lipsynching?

      Don't knock her, she's a commercial success.
    • Justin  •  3 months ago
I'll take The Who over any pop diva or any of today's mainstream artists for that matter. At least Roger Daltrey didn't lip synch. I don't think there were any musical instruments played on stage at all last night. All digital #$%$

Really great show ... it was the best show they've had in quite a while.
