Lady Gaga and Madonna face off on 'Saturday Night Live' on October 3, 2009 NBCAccess Hollywood
NEW YORK, New York -- "Saturday Night Live" is known for its surprise celebrity guests, but on Saturday, the NBC late night show had a big night even by its own standards.
Lady Gaga, the show's musical guest, was joined in a comedy sketch by one of her idols - Madonna. The two singers - dressed in revealing lingerie-like outfits - fought over who was the bigger star before being separated by Keenan Thompson during an MTV-style "Deep Dish House" segment.

"What's a disco stick?" Madonna yelled, pulling at Gaga's hair. In a move reminscent of Madonna moments with previous young pop stars Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, the pair almost shared a kiss, each planting a smooch on Keenan instead.
And the pop stars weren't the only surprise couple on the show. Scarlett Johansson appeared in a skit as a pitchwoman for porcelain fountains in a skit with Fred Armisen, in which she was joined by her husband, Ryan Reynolds, who was hosting the episode - a rare public appearance for the notoriously private couple.

Scarlett had previously joined Fred in skits shilling for marble columns and chandeliers when she hosted the program.
Another surprise noticed last night was that long-time cast member Darrell Hammond's name no loner appeared in the show's opening credits, although he appeared as recently as this past Thursday in the show's prime time "Weekend Update" segment. There has been no announcement about Hammond leaving the program.
