One Day at a Time actress Mackenzie Phillips was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport Wednesday for allegedly possessing heroin and cocaine, according to TMZ.com.

Officers were called to Terminal 4 at 10 a.m. this morning as Phillips, 48, was being screened by the TSA. According to TMZ, police discovered baggies and balloons believed to contain heroin and cocaine.

The actress has a history with drug abuse. She was fired from sitcom One Day at a Time 26 years ago because of her addiction.

As a kid, she says she prepared joints for her dad, John Phillips, the founder of the band, the Mamas and the Papas.

"I grew up in mansions, but everything was dirty and broken," she told USA Weekend magazine in 1999. "Very little was going on inside except sex, drugs and rock and roll."

Early on, she knew she had a problem.

"The first time I had a drink, it woke up the sleeping monster inside me," she said.

The actress blew through her $47,500 weekly salary from her sitcom by buying drugs, and soon found herself searching for quarters to buy food.

In 1994, she turned her life around, appearing as a drug counselor on 90210. A few years later, she also starred on Disney show So Weird, saying the network's producers, "embraced [her] baggage."

"Why did I survive?" she asked in USA Weekend. "Maybe it's to say to others, 'This happened to me. It could happen to you.' I don't mind being a poster girl."

The actress, who most recently appeared in a 2007 episode of Cold Case, has a son, Shane, 21.

Please leave the scriptures out of this unless you know what they are and mean. Jesus challenged "non believers" in the case of the aduterer. In fact the scriptures command Christians to judge and chastise the sinful actions and intent of all men and especially that of all brother/sister Christians. It doesn't matter how old you are, anyone can be addicted to anything. Drug addiction is a terrible demon. Some people (like her) fight it all their lives. Some win and some lose. I hope and pray that this time she will win. It is such a shame. Movie stars have the same problems as everyone else. I will pray for her.

I'm 58 and didn't just fall off the turnip truck, you need people to help w/ addictions. It seems pretty obvious to me that taking illegal drugs thru airport security is a very loud cry for help. I wish her all the best, hopefully working hard on banishing her "demons"

She has been troubled with addiction for such a long time. I was hoping she would beat it the last time. I hope she can some day find peace and get the help that is going to help her.
