While Madonna's halftime show received mixed reviews from the more than 100 million viewers watching around the world, the focus of this year's halftime show has been shifted to an obscene gesture from one of Madonna's guests: M.I.A.
Towards the end of M.I.A's verse in Madonna's "Give Me All Your Luvin'," the British rapper appeared to sing, "I don't give a (expletive)" and then raised her middle finger to the camera.
The incident, which marks the second Super Bowl halftime show controversy this decade, was only seen for a brief second. The screen was then blurred momentarily but it was unfortunately too late.
"The NFL hired the talent and produced the halftime show," NBC spokesman Christopher McCloskey said in a statement. "Our system was late to obscure the inappropriate gesture and we apologize to our viewers."
M.I.A is best known for her song "Paper Planes," which swept the charts in 2008.
Also performing at the Super Bowl halftime show were LMFAO, Nicki Minaj, and Cee-Lo.
