Lohan: 'I Regret The Choices I've Made'

Lohan Snags A 'Scary' Co-Star in Sheen

Lindsay Lohan sat down with Matt Lauer for a new Today show interview that was five years in the making. A lapse in time that kept coming up as Lauer fully went after the controversial starlet for her public antics over the last half-decade. And while I'm one of her biggest doubters, I have to give LiLo props -- not only was she contrite throughout the two-part interview, but she sounded cohearant, contrite and confident in her future.

"I've learned how to live my life in a way that I'm happy and I can do the things that I want to do," she said. "I think it's this recent whirlwind of experiences that I've gone through this past year and a half. I've kind of just taken a step back and I'm not doing what I love to do and I need to find that balance again."

To that end, Lindsay confirmed rumors she would be playing Elizabeth Taylor in a new Lifetime biopic: "It starts when she's in Cleopatra. We start production soon. I've been doing tons of research,. I'm really honored." And Lindsay is well-aware that this is only the first step on her path to redemption. "I could see where it could be scary for people to invest in me and I don't want people to have that reason and be scared anymore. I'm going to do what I'm supposed to do. I will not let anyone down – especially myself."

And a big part of that is owning the mistakes she's recently made -- something her hosting stint on Saturday Night Live this weekend promises to make the most of! "If I'm going to do a sketch about [my past legal issues], this is the place to do it. SNL is where you're actually OK to do that," she said, before admitting that many of those potentially self-mocking skits had to be legally cleared beforehand. "I spoke to my attorney, I didn't want to be disrespectful to my judge ... because I want to be in the clear. I'm so close. We'll see if we can write them the right way, I want to poke fun at myself."

As for how Lindsay plans to keep the Lindsa-nity at bay, she told Matt that a healthier circle of friends and colleagues has helped immensely. As has the continued presence of mother Dina, sister Ali and her brothers. A team that she hopes will get her back to the top of Hollywood's A-list.

"[Five years from now], hopefully I'll have just come from The Oscars. I just want to work. I like being on set. I like doing this kind of stuff and having positive things to talk about and I lost sight of that. I lost track of looking at myself in the mirror. [But now] I've learned to love myself and I think that's very important.
