LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Former "Prison Break" star Lane Garrison has been released from prison, Access Hollywood has confirmed.

The 28-year-old actor was released from a California Correctional Institute in rural Tehachapi, Calif., at 3:50 AM Wednesday. Garrison will next meet with a parole agent.

Public Information Officer John Bartelmie told Access that Garrison "was a participant in the substance abuse program" at CCI, which makes him eligible for a special "aftercare program."

Bartelmie said he did not know if Garrison would partake in the program.

According to E! Online, the actor was greeted by family and friends outside the prison.

"He's done his time and now he's looking forward to trying to move on with his life," a source close to the actor told E!.

As previously reported on AccessHollywood.com, last week the actor settled a lawsuit with Michelle Ohana and the parents of Vahagn Setian, a 17-year-old high school student who was killed after the actor got behind the wheel while intoxicated in 2007.

Garrison was driving a 2001 Land Rover when he lost control and rammed into a tree. The crash killed his passenger, Setian, who was a student at Beverly Hills High School. Two girls in the car - including Ohana - who was 15 at the time, survived.

Last year, Garrison responded to a letter from Access Hollywood, and in his handwritten note, revealed that prison has been tough. He also said he hopes people have taken a lesson from his story. "This has been the hardest year of my life," he wrote.

"I hope people, young and old, are learning from my mistakes and what can happen when you drink and drive. I have much to say about the pain I've felt and seen inside of prison. It has been eye-opening and a harrowing experience."

What does it matter if the girls were 15 and he was 20? Everyone thinks it is ok when miley cyrus does it. She just turned 16 this year and her boyfriend is 20. It is a shame!

Did those of you who do not want to blame Garrison read the story? He was 20 YRS OLD! He had a car full of minors (which is weird) he was the 'responsible adult' and CHILDREN were killed! You bet he deserved to go to jail. Was poor judgement shown on the part of these children? YES! But they were children...the driver is responsible for his actions and the result of said action

Wake UP Connie!!! Apparently you didnt read the story close enough. Three girls entered the car..their ages were 15 at that time. He would have been 20 at the time of accident. MINORS are classified as children under the age of 18. So, hell yah I do believe HE should have been entirely held accountable because he was the ADULT at the time.

what's wrong with you people?!? He should totally be held accountable. He was in his mid 20s at that time...with teenagers! It's illegal for him to get behind the wheel intox and for him to only do a year is not a good example of our so called justice system. I'm sure if it were any of us 'common people' a year would not be sufficient and no one would care a

Wow, only completed a year in prison for killing someone. That doesn't seem fair to me.

I agree with Connie. No One forced them into his car. I hate that someone died. But they all made their choices making a "beer run". I know how some teenagers can be (been there done that). If they can't buy it then they get someone else to buy it for them. It's easier to convince a person with a "buzz" to get your stuff for ya..... Don

I don't believe that the person who is the driver in a car and causes serious injury or death should be totally held accountable. Who held the gun to those victims heads to get in the car, they knew the decision they were making could cause them to lose their life. I believe whoever is in the car should be charged not only the driver. People who get in cars with drunk drivers kill themselv
