Lane Garrison is a free man.

According to E! News, the 28-year-old former Prison Break star -- who was sentenced to 40 months in state prison after pleading guilty to vehicular manslaughter without gross negligence and two other alcohol-related charges -- was released early Wednesday morning from California Correctional Institute in rural Tehachapi, Calif.

He was greeted by family and friends outside the prison.

Said a source, "He's done his time and now he's looking forward to trying to move on with his life."

He will now check himself into an in-patient rehabilitation center in order to shorten his probation period.

In 2006, the actor was involved in a crash that killed a 17-year-old boy and left a 15-year-old girl injured.

At the time of the crash, Garrison had cocaine in his system and his blood alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit of 0.08 percent.

Before he was sentenced in 2007, he told the court, "I think of you guys [the victim's family] every night. I felt what it's like to be in prison. I want to show that my walk with sobriety will be very easy. I want to help other kids not make the same mistake I did... I am sickened by my behavior on that night. My thoughts keep coming back to that night."

He did his time. Now he can move on. I wish him all the luck, with whatever he wants to do now.
