LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Kirstie Alley has gained 83 pounds since ending her Jenny Craig spokeswoman role, the star told People.

Kirstie, who appeared on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" last week to discuss her weight gain after appearing on the show in 2006 to show off a svelte bikini body, told the mag things got out of hand after parting ways with the Jenny Craig program.

"I didn't have to weigh in," she said. "I just sort of went wild."

The star said that her "food demons" weren't cakes and pies, instead showing a sweet tooth for Chinese food, sugar and butter.

"A lot of butter," she said. "If I'm at the movies, usually I eat popcorn without butter, but I'd say, 'I'm at the movies, so who cares?' And toast with butter. Or let's say I had two cups of pasta and six tablespoons of butter on it. There was a lot of butter going on."

And though she tried being a vegetarian for seven months, that only encouraged her to pack on the pounds.

"A vegetarian would probably be eating vegetables," she said. "But to me, being a vegetarian meant I'm going to eat enchiladas with no meat, and I'm going to eat lots of bread, lots of carbs."

Now, she said, she's ready to get back in shape - which means dropping from 228 pounds, her highest weight ever, down to 140 or better.

"I have to be below 140 to look really good," the 5'8" star said. "I have to work my legs like crazy. My real goal's always too low - I love the way I look at, like, 128... I'm ready to work. I'm gonna go, 'You know what? Get back on the horse, lose the freakin' weight, and then just move forward!"

I think Jenny Craig and Nutri System programs are only a temporary fix and once you stop, you gain all the weight back, I too have yo yo dieted with fad diets and still have a weight problem. Most of us have busy lives, I find it hard to feel sorry for rich people like Kristi, they have the time and money to hire nutritionist and trainers.

As we age to need to be mindful of our health. It is very difficult to change our eating patterns. Before we know it we are in our 50's and having a heart attack. It is so much fun to eat whatever we want!

Like Diane R. I had WLS & received my own miracle. In nine months, I have lost 120 lbs. I'm not saying surgery is right for Kirstie, but I will say that having it forced me to find other ways to deal with stress & other issues that contributed to my overeating. The key is to make sure you find healthy ways to cope, so you dont just trade one addiction for another. Kirstie i

People make too much of celebrities being fat. Look at the rest of America. Most people are really overweight. Lack of excersise is to blame.

Kristie like many Americans (all nationalities) is facing the worst sort of stress. We all suffer from the hand to mouth disease at one point or another. Kristie is a wonderful person!! People should lay off the fact that she is gaining weight, she's not perfect!! Look how many times Oprah has 'fallen off the skinny wagon'. Please pass the extra Buttery Popcorn my way
