Kevin James is the new king of movie openings.
The former
King of Queens star's first leading movie role is a surprise success as he had no trouble taking the top spot at the box office this weekend.
Paul Blart: Mall Cop made an estimated $33.8 million in its first three days, reports
Variety . It is expected to reach $40 million over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend.
Last week's No. 1 movie,
Gran Torino, dropped to second place.
Clint Eastwood 's flick earned $22.2 million.

My Bloody Valentine, cost moviegoers an extra $2 to $3 per ticket and earned $21.9 million. It was the No. 3 movie of the weekend.
Notorious -- the Sean "Diddy" Combs-produced biopic about his friend, The Notorious B.I.G. -- earned $21.5 million. It was the biggest opening ever for Fox Searchlight, which produced such hits as
Juno and
Little Miss Sunshine.
