Last night on the "Dancing With the Stars: All Stars" finale, Kelly Monaco addressed rumors about her possible showmance with partner Val Chmerkovskiy.
As she told Brooke Burke-Charvet during last night's episode, "Listen, I hope everybody can have friendships like this. I mean, this is what it is. It's a foundation of an amazing friendship. I know you're laughing, but it's true!"
Brooke joked that the audience wasn't laughing, but that they were groaning because they were disappointed.
Viewers weren't the only ones who were disappointed, as seen in Val's crestfallen expression after Kelly friendzoned him (on national television--ouch)! Still, he cherished the relationship he had with her, whatever the label.
As he explained, "This is what it is, it's unconditional love for each other, whatever that label is. It doesn't have to be boyfriend and girlfriend. It's a relationship that I cherish. She can rely on me and I know I can rely on her."
Although many "Dancing" fans were rooting for "Team Vally," both as a partnership and as a romance, I wasn't surprised to hear that they were not an official couple.
1. Kelly has admitted to having "trust issues."
Throughout the season, Kelly has admitted to having "trust issues" and "intimacy issues." Maybe this could explain why she always carried herself with such a somber and serious demeanor all season.
Despite her youthful physical appearance, Kelly is actually ten years older than Val. Sometimes life experience can make someone a little cynical about love and romance. (We can't blame her--soaps can certainly skew someone's views about relationships!)
2. Val has always seemed more into her than she was into him.
Although these two sizzled on the dance floor, Val always seemed more into her than she was into him. During one of their rehearsal packages, he talked about how he wanted "to do more things together after the show."
In another segment, Brooke commented on their sexy paso kiss and their steamy contemporary routine, then asked what we could expected from them at the finale. Val joked, "children!"
Val was clearly willing to take the relationship to the next level, but we never saw that kind of interest from Kelly. Of course, this could also be a question of personality, as Val seems to have a generally more open and trusting nature.
3. Kelly strategically refused to answer any questions about their relationship status until after the votes had been counted.
Throughout the season, Kelly had refused to answer any questions about their rumored showmance. Even during Monday's show, she was still being coy.
This was a wise strategic move because it kept the viewers interested and wanting more. Although Kelly proved herself to be a worthy contender this season, it certainly didn't hurt that the viewers wanted to keep them around in order to find out where this relationship was going.
Were you disappointed to hear that Kelly and Val were not an official item? Is their more to their relationship than just friendship? Would they make a great couple off-screen?
