Country singer Kellie Pickler stunned fans recently by donning a shaved head. But the "American Idol" alum isn't just trying out a new hairdo. She's doing this to support her best friend Summer, who has been diagnosed with breast cancer. Indeed, there are a few different reasons why many take this drastic plunge, although movie roles appear to be the most popular motives. Here are some notables…
Demi Moore shaved her head to star in "G.I. Jane." And boy, did she cause a stir when she did that. Not since admiring Ripley's (Sigourney Weaver) bald pate in "Alien" had many actresses been willing to go to such extremes to fit into a movie role. Demi matched the intensity of her new look with an equally fit movie physique.
In 2007, "American Beauty" star Mena Suvari shaved off her famous blonde locks. The typically-under-the-radar actress drew curious whispers. Although a character in indie film, "The Garden of Eden", prompted the gutsy move, the look seemed to fit her feisty personality.
And speaking of feisty vixens, most recently actress Chalize Theron joins Suvari in the buzzed trend. She too, chopped her signature strands for her upcoming film, "Mad Max." Somehow, we get the feeling that making the chop wasn't a big deal for her. Her turn in "Monster" proved that she could pull off just about anything.
Comic thriller "V for Vendetta" commanded a similar hairstyle for Natalie Portman. The Harvard beauty's action-packed role required much more than a new 'do. Nonetheless, it seemed the close crop only served to enhance her looks. Even Cosmopolitan magazine championed her "stunning" looks, with or without hair.
Honorable Mention- Cynthia Nixon
"Sex and the City's" Samantha (Kim Cattrall) may have been the one fighting breast cancer in the HBO series. But it's Cynthia Nixon (who played Miranda) who drew stares with a completely bald head in January 2012. Featured in the theatre production "Wit," her character is a professor who's dealing with some pretty intense chemotherapy.
(Dis)Honorable Mention? - Britney Spears
Britney Spears is perhaps the reason why people ignored Mena Suvari's buzz cut in 2007. After suffering a public meltdown, the "Toxic" singer appeared to go on a spree of sorts, getting tattoos, lunging at the paparazzi with umbrellas, and yes-sporting a shaved head (which cameras caught, mid-chop).
The pop diva revealed that her tight extensions just had to go. The leftover strands were allegedly posted on eBay. In retrospect, some might agree that the incident pales in comparison to the stuff other celebrities are doing.
