Actress Katie Holmes joins the millions of other celebs who've stripped down for endorsements. As the face in H. Stern jeweler ads, she gets downright sultry. Dewy, glistening, bronzed skin, smoky eyes, and that famous pout. We can all agree that she's giving serious face. As a fastidious member of Hollywood's elite, Holmes is perhaps the epitome of perfection. (Yeah, I know that's stretching a bit.)
Run down the list of her other qualities: Dutiful wife? Check. Doting mother? Yep, she's that too. Popular "teen" star? Uh-huh. Sex symbol? Hmmm… Maybe some will agree that despite her racy new ads, something still seems a bit forced. She looks great in the ad. But we get the feeling that the come-hither look took some reaching. But since age 40 is the new 20 in Tinseltown, she's got plenty of time to grow completely into a sex kitten. But until then, here's what's keeping her from femme fatale status.
She'll always be "Joey Potter"
Contemporaries of the "Dawson's Creek" star will always remember Katie as the infamously angst-filled Joey. Her breakout role took the concept of "Beverly Hills 90210" to a new level. This show was the thinking teenager's nighttime drama. And for that reason alone we'll forever think of her as "brooding."
Tom's not having it.
Somehow we get the feeling that Tom would never "let" her be a real sex symbol. Call it a Napoleon Complex or a mere issue of compatibility. Why such opinions? Perhaps because after two months of dating, they were engaged. And little Suri edged her way into the world before the two had even exchanged nuptials. She even dropped Catholicism for Scientology. You can see where we're headed with this…
Conservative Katie
Shortly after becoming glued to the hip with Tom Cruise, the world noticed an even calmer, more demure Katie Holmes. She chopped off her trademark long brown locks---in exchange for a sophisticated bob. And while she's quickly become the new poster child for young lady elegance, her overall wardrobe screams respectable wife and mother. (Not that that's a bad thing.) Couple that with her natural baby face, and she's just that much farther away from pin-up status.
Her films aren't helping.
Had Katie herself not called her movie career a "string of bombs," we might consider this one an insult. But the truth is that Holmes has had no movie role to define her with any concrete sex appeal. "Disturbing Behavior," "The Ice Storm," "Go"----and the list could go on---are just a few films where Katie seems like nothing more than an R-rated version of her character on "Dawson's Creek." Even her nude scene in 2000's "The Gift" failed to present a sexier persona; clothes or no, we just weren't buying it.
