They say to "write what you know," and it would appear that actress Katie Holmes believes in that particular axiom. By now, unless they were living under a rock, everyone knows that Katie has filed divorce papers to break away from her estranged husband, Tom Cruise. Now it would appear that Katie has co-written a screenplay about a single mom and her daughter and she will star in it too.
"Molly" will begin shooting in August of this year, and by then she'll be able to draw on some real-life experience in being a single mom. Katie is angling for full custody of Suri, her daughter with Tom. We thought we could take a look back at some other actresses who have played single moms in their career.
Julia Roberts in "Erin Brockovich" - The film is based on a true story of an unemployed single mom who starts working as a paralegal and winds up becoming a hero. Brockovich users her position to help successfully sue a power company for polluting her town's water. Roberts' performance in the film won her a Best Actress Academy Award.
Sigourney Weaver in "Ghostbusters 2" - At the start of the sequel to one of the most popular comedies of the 1980s, we learn that Weaver's character, Dana, has had a child in the time period following the first "Ghostbusters" film. We also learn that her baby's father is not in the picture, leaving room for Dr. Pete Venkman, played brilliantly by Bill Murray, to rekindle is love with Dana. Her baby Oscar winds up figuring prominently in the plot of the film as well, culminating in a showdown between the Ghostbusters and Vigo, the film's central villain.
Gabourey Sidibe in "Precious" - It's a gut-check of a film, but Sidibe's performance as a young single mother and the abuse she takes at the hands of her mother and society in general was so incredible it garnered the showbiz newcomer an Oscar nomination. The film shows the harsh realities of urban life, and is a story of personal growth and triumph in the face of incredible odds stacked against her. For her role as the abusive mother, Mo'nique took home a Best Supporting actress Oscar.
Helen Hunt in "As Good As It Gets" - Apparently Oscar has a thing for single moms. This film that also starred Jack Nicholson and Greg Kinnear cast Hunt as a single mom with a young son that has mysterious health ailments. Her performance was good enough to get her the 1998 Best Actress Academy Award and pushed her career to the next level, allowing her to move on from her hit NBC sitcom "Mad About You" and transition into being a full-time movie star.
