Kate Winslet Heading For TV With 'Mildred Pierce'

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Kate Winslet will star in the television miniseries "Mildred Pierce," according to Variety.

The star, fresh off her Oscar win for the film "The Reader," will play the title role in the latest adaptation of the James M. Cain novel. Kate's role is that of a bored housewife who tries out the restaurant business - and gets more than she bargained for. A previous version, the 1945 film of the same name, won Joan Crawford an Oscar.

"Mildred Pierce" will be Kate's first role since her awards season success with "The Reader" and "Revolutionary Road," which also saw her win both the Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress Golden Globes for her parts in the two films.

Todd Haynes ("I'm Not There," "Far From Heaven") is set to write and direct the miniseries.

HBO is reportedly a "lead contender" to pick up "Mildred Pierce," but there is currently no deal in place.
