How Kate Middleton, Prince William "Fell in Love" With Puppy

How Kate Middleton, Prince William "Fell in Love" With Puppy

Prince William and Kate Middleton have fallen in love all over again -- with an adorable cocker spaniel puppy, a boy, about a month old.

PHOTOS: The amazing year in royals

As confirmed earlier on Tuesday, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have adopted the puppy with whom they were photographed on a beach in Wales in early January.

"The puppy is theirs," a Palace aide tells Us Weekly, adding that Kate, 30, and Wiliam, 29, met the canine at Christmastime in Bucklebury, where Middleton grew up and where parents Michael and Carole still live.

PHOTOS: Kate's body over the years

"He belongs to a litter of cocker spaniels from one of Carole Middleton's friends near home," the aide explains, noting that William, 29, and Kate, 30, weren't 100 percent confident if they were ready for puppy parenthood.

"At first, they had just taken it  home for a short period of time to see how they adapt," the aide says.

PHOTOS: See William and brother Harry as little boys

Didn't take long!  "William and Catherine fell in love with the pup instantly and it wasn't long before they decided to keep him," the source says.

"He's now part of the royal fold!"

The first pic they had didn't have the puppy. They must have read the comments and changed the picture.

That black puppy in the picture is not a cocker spaniel and it's also way to big to be one month old!

Docking and cropping has been illegal in the Western European countries for decades. Unnecessary cruelty to animals. The dog in the picture is an English cocker spaniel and definitely more than 5 weeks old. Puppies have to be at least 8 weeks to be taken away from their mother, that's the law there.

Much more civilized than here though its getting more popular. I'll never dock or crop a dog again.

I think it's a very wise choice. Mine was a shelter dog named Honey..whom I called Miss Honey. She never liked kids too well when they came around. I think Will and Kate will have no regrets in choosing the cocker whether it's an English or American. I hope to get another someday.

A lot of people are Cocker Spaniel bashing here. For a long time, in the late 70s and 80s, they were overbreeding ASCOB* American Cocker Spaniels (the English Cocker Spaniel is a different breed entirely, and I'm fairly sure the D&D of Cambridge got one of those) and there were, indeed, problems, including rage syndrome. The puppy mills were responsible for this, not the dogs. Any breed of dog - including Labs and especially Golden Retrievers (who have been way overbred and are now showing incidents of rage syndrome) can be ruined by greedy breeders.

*Any Solid Color other than Black; usually blonde or buff.

I agree, our little guy was rescued by my sister along with his four other siblings almost 11 years ago from a horrible puppy mill. The breeder told her our little guy when she bought him was six weeks old and a pure bred toy poodle. My sister bought all his siblings and took them to the vet. They were full of parasites and fleas. She got them healthy and sold the to my neighbors for what she paid to rescue them. Our little guy was three weeks old and a cockapoo according to our vet. He has seizures but he is our baby and spoiled rotten He gets along wonderfully with all the grand babies. I believe the breeders of animals should be and Lord help me for saying this. REGULATED. There are horrible breeders out there as well as wonderful breeders. The bad make the news and the poor animals are the ones that pay the price. Congrats to the Royals for adopting their new addition.

In the past...a lot of different breed of dogs have overbreed after certain popular movies came out. The St. Bernard were gentle until they became popular and also the german shephard and as mentioned before..cocker spaniels had it happen to them years ago. They are are wonderful dogs when not interbreed within their own family. People have to check out the disposition of the puppies' parents before purchasing these puppies and also make sure they are not too closely related. That puppy looks like 8 weeks old.

Did the media not get the memo!!!! Kate MIDDLETON, got married to Prince William; regardless of protocal the title of Princess should come before Kate and Middleton should be discontinued. If not Prince and Princess how about just William and Kate everybody knows he's the Prince.

How do you not love a dog! They're awesome!
    • Brenda  •  Milwaukee, Wisconsin  •  3 months ago
Are these writers really that stupid? Common sense would clearly state that dog is older than a 4 weeks old and dogs typically don't leave their mothers until about 8 weeks at the earliest....why report something that clearly makes you look like a #$%$

The puppy in this picture looks way too old to be one month old and it also doesn't look like a cocker spaniel!

I never get tired of reading about the latest on these two. Now that I know they are 'dog' people, I like them even more.

My 5 year old nephew found a stray cat; thrown away cat actually. It was scruffy, skinny, and hungry. After about 3 weeks, "Stray" is clean, putting on weight and will not be going hungry. Why isn't the world covering this story??? Didn't I mention my nephew is the prince of our family???? LOL...I think this story is just as interesting as Will and Kate picking their family dog...thank you very much.

I hope they have a royal pooper scooper. But seriously, the puppy is too cute. You can bet that that dog will be living high on the hog. :-)
