It's a big celebration for all of the royals in Great Britain. According to reports, 30-year-old Kate Middleton is officially pregnant. "Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are very pleased to announce that The Duchess of Cambridge is expecting a baby," read a statement released by a spokesman. Despite the joyous news, Kate has been dealing with a bad case of morning sickness. "Her Royal Highness is expected to stay in hospital for several days and will require a period of rest thereafter," said the spokesman. Despite that setback, this is certainly exciting news for the popular couple. They've shared a long and winding road before getting to this point, and it wasn't always marked with joy. Here is look back at William and Kate's road to baby.
They met at college, but they didn't date immediately
The lovebirds first met in 2001 while attending the University of St. Andrews, but they didn't immediately strike up a romance. Some speculate that the couple started dating in 2002 after William was impressed by Kate's modeling skills at a school fashion show, but the relationship wasn't officially confirmed until 2004. After their big debut, the paparazzi were all over the budding romance. At one point in 2005, Kate even requested to be left alone by the press.
They briefly split in 2007
After several years together, the relationship between Britain's most famous couple hit the skids in 2007. In April of that year, reports began to surface that the couple had called it quits. A royal photographer claimed that breakup was 100 percent real, and reasons for the split ranged from William's time in the army to the constant press coverage. However, true love prevailed just a few months later when the two officially reunited. "Only when they took a step back did they have space to examine how they really felt about each other," said a source after the reunion news went public.
They were married in 2011
After a couple more years of dating, William finally proposed to Kate during a safari trip to Africa in October 2010, with William giving her the same engagement ring that his mom once wore. On April 29, 2011, the happy couple officially became husband and wife during a lavish wedding ceremony. More than 2,000 people attended the royal wedding, while countless others around the world watched on TV. They celebrated their first anniversary earlier this year, more than six months before officially announcing their baby news.
