John Edwards Jury Reaches Not Guilty Verdict & Declares Mistrial

On its ninth day of deliberations in Greensboro, NC., jurors found John not guilty on one out of the six counts on May 31 — then the judge declared a mistrial!

John Edwards’ fate is decided — he’s a free man! The former senator was facing six felony charges stemming from the 2008 presidential race in which he was accused of using $1 million in campaign funds to hide his extramarital affair with campaign videographer Rielle Hunter. But now he’s off the hook, after the jury found him not guilty on Count 3 and the judge ruled the rest a mistrial.

John had been on trial waiting to receive his verdict, while his eldest daughter Cate Edwards Upham and his parents Bobbie and Wallace Edwards have loyally shown up to court every day.

John was having his affair while married to his wife Elizabeth Edwards. Elizabeth died on Dec. 7 2010 after battling breast cancer.

We told you that John went off on an angry tirade during the trial, calling his mistress former mistress and mother to his now 4-year-old daughter Frances Quinn Hunter, “a crazy slut” when she revealed he got her pregnant during their 2007 affair, Edwards’ former aide testified April 24.

The former Democratic presidential candidate was “angry and concerned,” when he found out about the baby, his former aide Andrew Young said, calling Edwards a “master manipulator.”
