She rarely plays it safe on the red carpet and Sunday night was no exception for Jennifer Lopez.

The American Idol judge, 42, arrived at the 84th Annual Academy Awards in a custom Zuhair Murad couture gown with a plunging neckline and cut-out sleeves. She wore her hair in an oversized bun and carried a Salvatore Ferragamo silver mirrored minaudiere.

"I've always loved fashion since I was a little girl," she told Tim Gunn. "I enjoy playing dress up."
Lopez, who's been dating 24-year-old backup dancer Casper Smart since the fall, also talked about her ever-changing look.

"I grew up in the Bronx, my style was very kind of street and hip-hoppy. I still have a little bit of that, it evolves."
