Though the sexy singer has been dating the hunky back-up dancer for less than a year, the car gift could signify she is serious about her relationship with the man the tabloids call her "toyboy."
Almost a decade ago, Lopez was on the receiving end of a birthday car when her then-fiancé Ben Affleck gave her a Rolls-Royce Phantom for her 33rd birthday present. When the couple broke up a year later, a broken hearted J-Lo returned the luxury car.
But not all car gifts end badly. Beyonce gave her husband Jay-Z a Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport for his 41st birthday to add to his impressive automobile collection. Considered one of the fastest road-legal cars in the world, the vehicle goes from zero to 60 in 2.5 seconds and can hit speeds of 250-plus -- fast enough to escape the sounds of crying baby Blue Ivy Carter.
Another happy couple who is part of the birthday-car club is Nick Cannon and Mariah Carey. The rapper comedian indulged his diva with a Porsche Cayenne to soften the blow of turning 40 and even went the extra mile by having it painted "Mariah Carey Pink."
Despite the generosity of the gesture, a car gift is no guarantee a relationship will last. Heidi Montag's and Spencer Pratt's marriage sputtered despite her gift to him of a classic 1968 Chevrolet Camaro, and the hybrid union of Russell Brand and Katy Perry came to a halt even though the rainbow-haired singer gave her comedian hubbie a retro Ford Capri -- complete with driving lessons.
In the case of Lopez and her new boo, wags could make much of the almost-two-decades-older woman giving such a glitzy gift to a man whose net worth is relative pin money to the highly paid star. Even in Hollywood, the double standard exists of millionaire men marrying much younger women without the media making a big fuss over it. But when women like Demi Moore and Jennifer Lopez rob the cradle, the star is called the dreaded c-word -- "cougar."
Smart, however, doesn't seem to care about the perception he is a kept man and considers the couple's age disparity a non-issue, according to a Twitter post. "Age, status, n opinions of others are irrelevant. Our hearts are endless and our souls infinite," he tweeted in January. "Our ages are mere reminders of the hours logged on this earth and the precious time remaining. We should all honor our time here by indulging our passion and dreams. So, close your ears and open your hearts; Love and be happy!"
