LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Jennie Garth is no stranger to the importance of heart health. Not only did the actress lose her father to heart disease, she is also now revealing details about her own heart aliment to Access Hollywood.

"I've been affected by heart disease practically my whole life," she recently told Access' Tony Potts at an American Heart Association's Go Red For Women BetterU Program event. "My father has struggled with heart disease since he was 50 and I lost him a year ago."

Having heart disease on both sides of her family has inspired her to talk for the first time about the aliment she discovered seven years ago during her first trip to a cardiologist.

"I have a leaky valve," she explained. "And it's a common thing. A lot of people have it, They don't know they have it... [it] leaks blood."

Jennie said at times she feels it actually happening.

"It's your connection to your heart... your artery, the main artery that goes to your heart," she said. "It sort of flutters open and shut sort of a thing, so you... it's weird because sometimes when I'm resting I can feel a little weird fluttering."

Though she's able to currently lead a normal active life, she noted that trouble could arise as she ages.

"Down the road it's something that could get more complicated or it could not," she explained. "People have had valve replacements and that kind of thing... but I'm prepared, that's the key."

hey oink!! looks to me like you are the total drama queen. this is the first time that i have ever seen an interview were jennie garth is complaining about anything, and she's not even doing that in this interview. she is just stating a fact, and even said it is common. why bash her for saying she has a heart condition?? that just makes her more human in my book.

PS we all 'actually feel it when it is happening'....Gheeez....there are millions out there who have it and dont even pay attention to it anymore..... Again, you will end up bringing illness onto yourself, by constantly focusing on commonplace conditions.......don't be such a total drama queen

Jenny, incase my other comment didn't go thru...Ill bet you are great fun to be with...all you do is focus on all of these physical things...I am almost 60...I too, have mitral valve prolapse an arthritis....never stopped me from doing a thing including horsebackriding, etc...do you really think we need to know on a weekly basis, every single thing that is not perfect in your body?

I appreaciate Jennie Garth's open honesty about her own heart condition & how it affects 1 in evry 10 Americans & their families every year. I also lost lost my father two years from a very similar condition, but I would like to thank Jennie for her courage & example for coming open to the public about her condition.

This condition is more serious than Jennie is letting on. I lost my best friend of 25 years to MVP. She was just 36 and led to believe by her doctor that it was not that serious and someday in the future she may need a valve replacement. She died when her second child was just 6 months old, when her blood volume returned to normal. "leaky valve" makes it sound so benign.
