Jamie Foxx Defends NFL Star Michael Vick Over Dog Fighting Charges

Access Hollywood - August 23, 2007 12:50 PM PDT

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (August 23, 2007) â€" Access Hollywood's Shaun Robinson recently sat down with Jamie Foxx for a candid talk about Jamie's new gig â€" and even a hot button topic from the world of sports â€" Michael Vick's dog fighting charges.

Jamie is busy doing his thing on "The Foxxhole," his weekly show on Sirius Satellite Radio show. And while an incredible LG Beach House in Malibu provides a spectacular summer backdrop, no subject is off-limits with Jamie, as Shaun found out during her stay as a special guest.

"Is he really going to jail?" Jamie asked Shaun about Michael Vick.

"Yes, he's going to plea bargain," Shaun said.

Although Vick has been almost universally condemned since agreeing to plead guilty to dog fighting conspiracy, according to Foxx, people should not be so quick to judge the NFL star.

"It's a cultural thing, I think," Jamie said. "Most brothers didn't know that, you know. I used to see dogs fighting in the neighborhood all the time. I didn't know that was Fed time. So, mike probably just didn't read his handbook on what not to do as a black star."

While he has a way of lightening even the most sensitive of subjects, Jamie is sincere in his belief that the quarterback is not being given a fair shake.

"I know that cruelty to animals is bad, but sometimes people shoot people and kill people and don't get time," Jamie continued. "I think in this situation, he really didn't know the extend of it, so I always give him the benefit of the doubt."

On Monday, Vick said through a lawyer that he will plead guilty to a federal charge of conspiracy to travel in interstate commerce in aid of unlawful activities and conspiracy to sponsor a dog in an animal fighting venture.

Vick is scheduled to appear next Monday in U.S. District Court in Richmond, Virginia. According to reports, the recommended sentencing range will be from 12 to 18 months in prison.

Jamie Foxx is a very ugly man that can't sang and is a very good actor when he is being funny or being Ray Charles. What Mike Vick did was not cultural it was cruel and he deserved to be in jail he should have stayed in jail a year for each dog he abused and that was killed. He is a sick person and I don't support anything he does. He is sorry

Michael Vick will be making $10/hr working at the Purena Dog food processing plant. He will get a job tasting dog food and approving its new flavor - Michael Vick Flava'!

if michael vick thought about what he had done before doing it, he wouldnt be in this mess i agree with the law and anyone who tries or does something like this in the future should be punished severely for harming and permanantly damaging the poor animals life. as a result, the animals are scared and might even die.

i think that it was good for michael vick to be punished this way. even though he apologized, he didnt apologize to the poor dogs that are marked forever and scared. he needed to learn his lesson and learned it by going to jail. i believe that anyone that does anything similar to what vick did, should be punished just like him. i cant believe that someone so famous and rich like him lost millions.

i agree i think that the punishment was really harsh and he should have been given a fine or something else. but you know he is really stupid how can you have all this money and be as big as he is but want to kill dogs on the side, he could have gotten a better hobby then this expecially since people don't play about their dogs

Meanwhile, Jed's weekly deer hunting show, followed by Bubba's duck hunting, followed by an all day marathon of fishing is on CMT. Hypocrites! Meanwhile Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, and Nicole Ritchie are free to put human lives in danger as well as influence more people to get behind the wheel of a car drunk and high.

  • I think he was wrong, but the punishment is to harsh. Give him a stiff fine and call it a day, all this barring him from football and giving him jail time is to extreme. Ain't bout race, it's the media and people hungry for stories.

Did Michael Vick actually admit to drowing, electocute and other things or they are just accusations? Just because he took a guilty plea does not mean that he is guilty. I believe he took the plea bargain, because he knew that he wouldnt get a fair trial. Also when Jamie Foxx said cultural I dont think that he meant "black people", but American Culture.
