A source tells the newest issue of Us Weekly, on stands Wednesday, that the couple split just before Christmas.

"They didn't want to make a big deal about it," another insider says of the pair, who started dating in June after Cook, 26, asked out the Season 2 contestant while she was interviewing him on TV.
The reason for the split?
"He has a lot of options and wants to explore them," the pal tells Us. "He doesnt want to be tied down."

As for one tabloid report that the Season 7 winner planned to propose to Caldwell, 26, with a 2-carat Tiffany diamond, the source says, "That rumor was not true. The relationship just sort of dissolved."
The couple were going strong as recently as last fall.
"We just play the doting boyfriend and girlfriend," Cook told Us in October of their relationship.

She was hoping the rumor was true that he was going to propose to her, he then broke up with her and to save face her publicist made up the story about her being with some guy at a bar. David Cooks songs pretty much explain what happened between them. Cook has girls falling all over him.
