'Idol Gives Back' Returning To 'American Idol'

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- "American Idol" will ask its millions of viewers to reach deep into their pockets for a good cause once again. The FOX reality competition's "Idol Gives Back" will return on April 21, as part of a results show, to benefit five important charitable organizations.

"I am very pleased to announce that we will be doing our 'Idol Gives Back' on April 21, 2010," "Idol" creator and CEO of 19 Entertainment Simon Fuller said in a statement released to Access Hollywood. "This is our opportunity to reach out and support the people of America and around the world who need our compassion and generosity to improve or even save their lives. America will undoubtedly prove once again what a remarkable and generous nation it is. For 'American Idol' to be able to facilitate this kind of initiative makes me very proud."

This year's charity concert event will benefit the Children's Health Fund, Feeding America, Malaria No More, Save the Children's U.S. Programs and the United Nations Foundation - all of which will be greatly aided by even the smallest donations, said Mike Darnell, FOX's President of Alternative Entertainment.

"In today's tough economic times, it's more important than ever - but more difficult than ever - to raise money to help those in need," Darnell explained. "With this year's 'Idol Gives Back', we're focused on raising awareness about the challenges that so many children and families currently face and demonstrating how even small donations can make a difference and help save lives. Every little bit counts."

To date, "Idol Gives Back" has raised over $140 million for charity. Viewers will once again be able to make donations during and following the show.

But, the April 21 "Idol" won't be all good news - one "Idol" finalist will be sent packing too.

The new season of "American Idol" debuts in January on FOX.
