Actress Heather Locklear has reportedly been battling an addiction to alcohol for many years, and it may have been the major factor that contributed to her broken engagement with actor Jack Wagner in November. A source told US Weekly that the 50-year-old has been out of control for many years, and that "her drinking has caused her to fall out of many friendships."
Apparently Wagner had been able to keep the former "Spin City" actress from completely crumbling, but when they split she stopped getting out of bed, and she entered rehab shortly afterward. Her family had kept it quiet, but after she was rushed to the hospital on January 12 in Thousand Oaks, California, tongues began to wag. The former "Melrose Place" star still hadn't taken her treatment seriously enough, and was even seen at a Los Angeles Lakers game just two days earlier looking clearly disheveled and visibly drunk.
We hope that her hospital scare was enough to help her get on the right track. We'd hate to see her go down the same road that many celebs have famously battled. The death of singer Amy Winehouse last summer was a sad and tragic end to her short life in which she too suffered from the devastating disease of alcoholism.
Although we may hear more about those lives that have ended in much the same way, there are quite a few who have fought and won a battle against alcohol.
The beautiful Eva Mendes was one actress who came out on top after struggling with a drinking problem. In 2008, she entered Utah's Cirque Lodge for treatment. Several months later she spoke with Interview magazine and said that she was "proud of people who have the determination and the fearlessness to actually go and face their demons and get better." The stunning actress said that she hoped to support others who decide to go in and get help.
Today, the sexy 37-year-old is dating one of the hottest men in the world, actor Ryan Gosling, and has continued to have a strong career in Hollywood.
The ever resilient Drew Barrymore famously battled her addiction to both alcohol and drugs. It took three rehab stints before she was 13 years old, but by the time she was legally an adult, she emerged sober and went on to have a long and successful Tinsel Town career. The "Charlie's Angels" actress is now engaged to art director Will Kopelman and seems to be exceedingly well both professionally and personally.
