'Hairspray' Sequel & 'Rocky Horror Picture Show' In The Works

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Fresh off the success of this summer's feature film version of "Mamma Mia," Hollywood is clamoring for more singing and dancing on the big screen. Musical fans will get their wish with a sequel to 2007's "Hairspray" and a remake of the cult classic film "The Rocky Horror Picture Show."

New Line Cinema has tapped "Hairspray's" creator John Waters to pen a treatment for a sequel to the Baltimore-based musical, Variety reported.

Director-choreographer Adam Shankman will return for the sequel, but no cast announcements have been made. The studio told the trade mag, they hope the entire original cast will return for the sequel.

The studio is reportedly hoping for a mid-July 2010 release.

If John Travolta does his "Hairspray" drag again, he'll have some competition from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show's" gender-bending Dr. Frank-N-Furter, who will make his big screen return in a remake of the cult-classic slated for MTV Films, the trade mag also reported.

All the original songs from "Rocky" and some music not included in the first version will reportedly be used in the MTV update.

Casting for the remake has not been announced, but the producer told the mag he hopes for a Halloween 2009 debut.

I'm watching RHPS right now and mentally scanning the world of celebs and I can't think of a single person who could hold a candle to Tim Curry.... or Richard O'Brien as Riff Raff. Then I had this waking nightmare of Mike Meyers as Eddie (not that seeing hacked to bits wouldn't bring me a small amount of pleasure) and Reese Witherspoon as Janet.

Oh god; first Fame, now Rocky Horror? WHY?! Those movies are seriously just NOT meant to be re-made. Though I do agree that Burton would be a really fun combo with Little Shop of Horrors ^^

Well im slightly disapointed but still very curious. At the end of theday if it does badly we can laugh at it. If not why be angry its obviously a sucsess. Nothing will top the original but no one is killing off the original it will always be there!

I'm curious but very afraid for a new RHPS. I mean, it's a cult classic. It tried to mainstream, and failed. It wasn't a good movie, and yet it was amazing. And really, who wants to try and top Tim Curry. I think nobody. If they're going to remake ANOTHER musical, I think Tim Burton should see what he can do with Little Shop. (I really do love the original.)

Please leave RHPS alone. The original is a classic for a reason. If you want to get a new generation of people interested in the movie, then MTV....play the original or pay for a national re-relase. But it's no need to remake it. I mean....Tim Curry, who can top him?!

Oh come on! Leave RHPS alone. Why do they have to do an updated one? The original already has such a following. Just for the money I guess.

Hairspray and Rocky Horror Picture Show are two awesome musicals no matter who stars in them. A remake of rocky horror probably won't be as good as the original, but will probably be neat. :-)
