In what has to be her most peculiar outfit ever, Gwyneth Paltrow showed up at her "Iron Man 3" premiere in Paris Sunday wearing an Erdem pantsuit (picture here) whose pattern was more Midwest grandma than chic fashionista. Both top and pants were flecked with yellow, purple and burgundy embroidered flowers, a pattern that somehow managed to look both busy and boring at the same time.
Oh, and did we mention her shirt had pointy shoulder pads?
Though a fashion fail on many levels, the main problem with Paltrow's pantsuit is that floral patterns tend to make women look matronly (think Queen Elizabeth here), especially when worn head to toe. Even celebrity children like Suri Cruise know better than to go floral top to bottom. Here the choppy-banged junior celebutante tempers a floral mini-dress with star-patterned tights.
The GOOP blogger's pantsuit was designed by Erdem Moralioglu, whose signature use of floral prints is usually more subtle. If Gwyneth had opted to wear this Asian-inspired floral dress by the same design house, she would have looked amazing, although we think the model's matchy-matchy shoes are a bit much. (To Gwyneth's credit, she wore pointy-toed dark-blue Jimmy Choos with her Erdem ensemble.)
Surprisingly, not everyone was offput by Paltrow's fashion choice. A British magazine blogger wrote, "Gwyneth Paltrow got us in the mood for summer," making us wonder if "Fiona Raisbeck" is really a nom de plume for the queen.
Seriously, if we didn't know better we'd guess that the usually chi chi "Shakespeare in Love" star wore the wacky pantsuit on a dare. Maybe Apple or Moses agreed to eat a gluten-free tree-sap sweetened brownie in exchange for mumsy parading around as a human bouquet.
The wife of rocker Chris Martin has gone with risky looks in the past with greater success. At the 2012 Oscars, she wore a white Tom Ford gown (picture here) with matching cape that was more fabby than ghastly.
In 2010, she popped in a shocking pink Prada mini-dress at the National Movie Awards in London (picture here) at which she was promoting "Iron Man 2."
With the Erdem pantsuit, it looks like Paltrow is reverting to her Laura Ashley days. At age 12, she accompanied her famous actress mom Blythe Danner to a Studio 54 party wearing this prim floral dress with lace collar.
Could it be the now-40 Gwyneth is trying to reclaim her youth?
