Awards shows are as much about the fashion as they are about the accolades, and the Grammys often bring us some of the most daring, controversial dresses the stars and their favorite designers can dream up. This year there was the added bonus of the "no risque clothing" memo from CBS, that many performers took as a challenge rather than a request. While some of the stunning gowns drew unanimous praise or derision, these three ladies caused plenty of debate with their unique style choices.
Adele: The Grammy Award-winning singer is consistently lauded for her vocal ability, but reviews were mixed on her bright red Valentino dress, which you can see here. We think the joyously bold pattern fit in well with Taylor Swift's "Alice in Wonderland" themed opening performance, and it earned praise from those who considered the long-sleeved number "fun, flirty and vintage." Adele fan @rollinginadele raved: "My sole purpose in life was to see Adele wearing red... LIFE COMPLETE!"
However, some found the high-necked, A-line frock too frumpy for the music star, with Zap2It labeling it "less high fashion, more mom's tablecloth." Tweeters compared it to couch fabric and @theilluminati joked, "Someone should set fire to that dress."
Jennifer Lopez: The actress/singer is no stranger to risque fashion at awards shows, and she once again flashed plenty of skin. "As you can see, I read the memo," she joked, gracing the Grammys in an off-the-shoulder black dress that revealed her entire leg from toe to hip. Huffington Post considered the Anthony Vaccarello ensemble the perfect glam look to go with her new, young boyfriend. Many commenters agreed with the, "if you've got it, flaunt it" ideal, and thought the dress flattered J-Lo's figure.
Some were not so forgiving, however, wanting the 43-year-old mother to remember her age and start covering up a little. There may have been a few references to "desperate" attempts to stay in the limelight. Of course, there were also plenty of comments on her similarity to another sexy star, including competing tweets from @saraschaefer1: "Angeline Jolie's leg is totally rolling its eyes right now" and @kingsleyyy: "Jennifer Lopez's leg just made Angelina Jolie's leg irrelevant."
Katy Perry: The sexy pop star wasn't afraid to flaunt her assets on Sesame Street, so it's no surprise that a strongly-worded memo from CBS wasn't going to deter her from her usual style. Donning a sea green dress with a large, keyhole neckline, she reportedly "flustered" Ryan Seacrest with her cleavage and drew some supremely focused attention from Ellen DeGeneres, as this photo flying around Twitter shows.
The attention on her curves ranged from positive to kinda creepy, but some style critics did manage to focus on the fashion. HuffPo wasn't happy with the 70s-inspired skintight look, lamenting that the embellishment looked like "a cheap plastic flower arrangement." Other style sites like E!Online praised the glamorous gown, and the torrent of tweets on the look were overwhelmingly positive--and 99% unprintable on a PG-rated website.
What do you think, omg! readers? Were these gowns hits or misses?
