Glam Slam: Famous Fashion

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen just announced that they are starting yet ANOTHER fashion line... this one an affordable juniors line for JCPenney called Olsenboye. The stylish stars already have successful high end lines Elizabeth and James and The Row in their growing fashion empire and they earned an estimated $15 million in 2008 alone.

Celebrities dabbling in fashion is nothing new, but it's interesting that a certain generation of young Hollywood stars like the Olsens, Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie have transformed themselves from tabloid targets into bankable brand names. A few short years ago, these stars would've made headlines for hitting the clubs. (Sometimes without underwear!) Now they are competing against each other at the cash register.

After successfully launching a maternity collection for A Pea In The Pod and her House of Harlow jewelry line, Nicole Richie is also branching out again. House of Harlow is expanding to include shoes and Nicole is also starting a vintage inspired clothing line called Winter Kate coming out next year. I just saw a private preview of the collection and it's very Nicole, very cool.

Nicole's former BFF Paris Hilton has her name on 14 different brands and she earns upwards of $7 million a year. Jessica Simpson has her own successful line of shoes, purses, clothes and accessories, which she has said is a $400 million business with hundreds of employees. Both Paris and Jessica may have trouble opening a movie or selling CDs, but when it comes to fashion, they deliver.

Lindsay Lohan, on the other hand, hasn't had as much success. Her once promising acting career is in a tailspin. Her forays into fashion haven't exactly hit a retail home run either. First there was the self tanner. Then the line of leggings. Now - she's the much-hyped Artistic Adviser of Paris fashion house Ungaro, but her first collection for the company was ripped to shreds.

Lindsay says, "It's the same with everything I have done... I am a target.

Is she really? I certainly think her personal baggage weighs her down, but in the case of Ungaro, the clothes were bad, plain and simple. Hopefully, Lindsay can get it all together. And if she wants to take another stab at fashion, I suggest she does something more affordable and more accessible. In other words, take a page out of Jessica's or the Olsen's playbook!
