Giuliana Rancic: Double Mastectomy Recovery "Was Hell"

Giuliana Rancic: Double Mastectomy Recovery "Was Hell"

Two-and-a-half weeks after undergoing a double mastectomy, Giuliana Rancic admits she's gone to hell and back during her recovery process.

Speaking to Matt Lauer on Friday's Today Show along with her husband, Bill, Giuliana, 37, says she's now "feeling great," but it took a long while to get there.

"I knew this was going to be a tough surgery but I in no way want to minimize it. Yes, I'm two-and-a-half weeks out, but up until a week-and-a-half ago it was hell. It was horrible," she admitted to Lauer.

In decidedly good spirits when she was wheeled into the operating room December 13, Rancic says she jokingly told surgeons she was ready to "party."

After the procedure, Rancic used morphine to manage her pain, but found that the medication made her sick.

"I went into surgery at 4 p.m. and got out around 9:30 p.m. and by 4 a.m., I had to get off the morphine because I was so sick and I thought to myself, '[if I threw up] you have to engage all of your chest muscles and I just had my chest operated on.'"

As she continues to recover, the E! News hostess relies heavily on the support of her husband of four years.

"I can't really turn much to put my seatbelt, he has to help me get in and out of bed, get dressed…it's a lot of limited mobility and pain," Rancic reasoned Friday.

But as the couple prepare to ring in New Year's Eve in New York City's Times Square with NIVEA, the Rancics look forward to 2012 and a new beginning.

"As soon as 2012 comes in," says Bill, "we're not looking back."

Bill and Guiliana are an adorable, sweet couple. I am so sorry they have had to go through this, and I pray for her speedy recovery. I realized what a sweet person Bill Rancic is when I saw a little news piece on his show when he went on a mission to deliver hearing aids to deaf children and young people in underdeveloped countries. Those people were ecstatic and Bill was SO, so, sweet. It just made me cry, especially because my little girl is hearing impaired. God bless you, Bill and Guiliana. Get well.

OMG! I had no idea that this beautiful lady had gone through this. My heart aches for what she has had to deal with. I know first hand, the fear one faces, all the emotions one goes through and the fear of the unknown. My prayers are with her and her husband at this very trying time. She is extremely fortunate to have such a wonderful and loving husband, it's obvious he just adores her. There is NOTHING a women needs more at a time like this. I wish all the best for the both of them in the new year. Giuliana, may you heal fast, mind, body and soul!

Wow - a week?? And she's already up and about, 2 1/2 weeks post-surgery, and going out for New Year's Eve? Sheesh....I've seen c-sections that were worse than that. Good for her!

There are all kinds of theories as to what's causing the epidemic, but some is just better testing methods. More cancer is being discovered earlier. Sometimes, there are things we just don't know. Things happen and sometimes to the nicest of people.

i think its the food we eat. think sbout it 60 years ago our cancer rates were low, why? cause we were eating better more home meals and veggies remember mom saying eat ur veggies? no aways ' eat your mc donalds hamburger'' there are ,more chemicals in food now than there ever has been cmon its the food we eat and the rest i think is enviromental and genetic pre dispistion. WE need to stop loading up on nasty fast food all out lives, cause the chemicals build up in our bodies called candida yeast and cause a manipulation int he cells. DOnt be sheep and listen to the government when they say foods safe with all the chemicals we eet. They dont know that and they dont want to look bad. they want people to get cancer so they make money in the backend off the money we spend to save our lives treatments. DOnt u think its suspicious that no cure has been found yet? cmon they have been close but they dont want a cure because they make money pandering to drug companies who donate to their campaigns. do your researcxh buy kevin treadaus book natural cancer cures, they tried to kill him beacuse he was getting onto their games. save tyour lives and stop eating govt fda approved foods its all crap. look everything in food now adays has like 50 ingredients in it. Now nobody is saying u have to be a health nut and eat celeery and lettuce all sday.. but 1. give up soda and diet soda is has a chemical in it called aspertame that the govt knew causes cancer an still approved it ( read book explains) and the does in it causes cancer to.
        2. eat more fruits and veggies doesnt have to be crazy ( all you need to do is make a smothie everysay for ur fruits ( add rasperberries, blueberries and raspberries you can buy a big frozen bag of theese that will last a week or 2 at target for 12 dollars... you can even add carrot juicce to get more vitamins odwalla has carrot juice for 5.99 a big jug that will last a week or 2. just add some veggies to your dinner not hard. 3. switch some simple things to organic.. eat organic cereal like kashi or cascadian farms (t here are lots of options now a days that are cheap. 4. stop eating certain meats. i know its alot to ask of pple to stop eating meats alall together so just stop eating pork , pork is from a filthy animal and had many chemicals in it. Even try to switch if u can to grass fed meat or organic meat, 5.drink lemon water. leamon water once a day detoxifies the liver and body simple and cheap way to prevent cancer.

        6. exercise a bit more cancer cant thrive in oxygenated space properly so moving around getting the lymps moving will greatly help.

IF EVERYONE JUST TRIED SWITCHING FROM THEIR ORDINARY AMERICAN DIET OF SUGARY CERAL AND POPTARTS AND PANCAKES TO A KASHI OR ORGANIC CEREAL THAT TASTES EVEN BETTER AT THE SAME PRICE AND THEIR SUBS AND PIZZA AND TWINKIES FOR LUNCH AND THEI=R PIZZA MEATLOAF AND PORKCHOPS AND HOTDOGS FOR DINNER WE WOULD SEE THIER CANCER RATES GO DOWN,

Take a break. I watch their show and they always have so many balls in the air slow down. Did she really have to be back at work two weeks ago? Recovery takes time.

I wish Guiliana a quick recovery both physical and mental from the monster that is breast cancer. She is very lucky to have such a caring, empathetic husband for support and comfort. I lost my mother, aunt, and grandmother to breast cancer, and have others in my family who are survivors, I pray that in 2012 that someone finds a way to stop this dreaded disease!

This was major surgery and most doctors usually want a patient to be off work for at least 6 weeks afterward. She's complaining about not being able to do everything after 2 1/2 weeks, that the morphine didn't agree with her system which happens frequently and that she went through hell? Welcome to the real world after major surgery. I'm sorry she had to have a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery. I'm just really surprised she thought recovery would be a cake walk.
      • Kim 4 months ago
I don't think it was so much that she thought it would be a cake walk as she had no idea how difficult it would be. Likely physically and mentally.
      • Iwork Forcelebs 4 months ago
mary thats very mean of you. your not in her brain. shes alive and well you are noone to tell her how to feel just be supportive
      • Pat 4 months ago
It did not come across to me like she was complaining. She was just stating that the morphine didn't agree with her.
