    Is George Lucas really retiring?

LOS ANGELES, Jan 17 (TheWrap.com) - "I'm retiring. I'm moving away from the business, from the company, from all this kind of stuff."

So said George Lucas to The New York Times in an interview published online Tuesday morning.

But should the director's supporters -- or detractors -- believe him?

According to the N.Y. Times article, Lucas is still leaving room for a possible fifth installment in the Indiana Jones franchise. He also said he might go back to his "THX 1138" roots and make experimental movies that would only be shown in art houses, if anywhere.

That's the kind of wiggle room that would make Steven Soderbergh proud. The director has stated in numerous interviews that he intends to retire from making movies to focus on painting full-time. But in addition to "Haywire," which hits theaters Friday, he also has "Magic Mike" due June 29, and "Behind the Candelabra" set for release next year.

Also, Lucas could be smarting from the treatment he allegedly got from Hollywood while trying to make the Lucasfilm-produced "Red Tails," which hits theaters Friday.

Last week, he talked about how difficult it was to sell studios on the project during a "Daily Show" appearance.

"It's because it's an all-black movie," he told Jon Stewart. "There's no major white roles at all. It's one of the first all-black action pictures ever made." Whether Lucas is disgruntled enough to break up with Hollywood remains to be seen. But at least one trusted associate believes Lucas really is exiting the business.

"Once is finished, he's done everything he's ever wanted to do," Rick McCallum, who has produced the last three "Star Wars" installments, told the Times. "He will have completed his task as a man and a filmmaker."

As Yoda might say, "Bruised, perhaps, his ego must be."

For me, Star Wars begins and ends with the original trilogy that started in 1977. I never cared for, or even went out to theaters to see, the more recent films. I think that Lucas saw he had a major cash cow on his hands and just milked it for all it was worth. How else to explain telling the story backwards?! To me, if it ain't got Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and Carrie Fisher...it AIN'T STAR WARS!

No need to worry, if he changes his mind in a couple of years, he'll just get his hands on this interview and digitally change it to suit his needs.

George, just one name says it all. Jar Jar Binks. The shark was jumped when he showed up.

Completed his task as a man? Really? What an odd thing to say.

I applaude Star Wars and Indiana Jones, as well as the technical achievements his company has contributed to the film industry. But with his re-editing, to make it more politicaly correct, the Cantina shoot out with Han Solo, the nuking the fridge scene in "... Chrystal Skull", not to mention Jar Jar Binks, ...yeah, it's time to wrap it up.

If he has any love of the art he'll make one last sequal about the jedi offspring while Carrie Fisher,Mark Hamill and Harrison are still alive!

There were some all-black action movies in the 1970s, though, they tended to be low-budget.

I respect Mr. Lucas decision. He did a great job on all of his films. I just wish there was another person continue the work of the great sci-fi pictures. Gene Roddenberry was the very first to create the sci-fi and then Mr. Lucas and some others that got into the TV also in the early seventy's and eighties. Looks like when Mr. Lucas goes to the great sky. I really wonder who is going to take over what they have done. Great work to all of the ideas of all of the great people that makes the common man dream on.

We won't ever see the last trilogy of Star Wars in the lifetime of George Lucas. Lucas has said that is takes ten years of casting, production, filming, marketing, etc. to produce a trilogy. Do you think he's interested in putting that much into the last trilogy this late in life? I say his kids will do the last trilogy after he's gone.

for everyone complaining that he messed up the star wars movies with his tinkering...i dont recall anyone being forced to watch them. they are his creation. he has the right to do as he pleases with them. and in regards to jar jar binks..much like the other star wars characters..lucas created a very memorable one. and again..if you dont like the tinkering or the characters..dont watch them. mr. lucas, i hope you change your mind regarding retirement. you have provided great and iconic movies and i thank you for this
