Gene Simmons famously proposed to his girlfriend of 28 years, Shannon Tweed, on the season finale of the couple's reality television show, "Gene Simmons' Family Jewels." On Saturday, October 1, 2011, the wedding ceremony took place in front of 400 guests, though viewers of the series will have to wait until Tuesday, October 4, to watch the nuptials on A & E.
Simmons said that although he will do his best to stay faithful to Tweed, he will not vow to do so. The groom with the huge ego, and womanizing ways, had been staunchly opposed to marriage, and especially monogamy. After Tweed threatened to end their long relationship, the aging rocker admitted that it was "time for him grow up," and says that he does love Tweed. But he will not promise her that he will remain monogamous.
A line from the movie, "Sleepless in Seattle," came to mind as soon as I heard Simmons comments: "Marriage is hard enough without bringing such low expectations into it, isn't it?"
Although Tweed and Simmons have been together for nearly three decades, their marriage feels like more of a publicity ploy than the real thing. With the odds against celebrity marriage, coupled with Simmons propensity for sexual escapades, theirs seems destined for doom.
But is it the worst celebrity coupling ever?
Pamela Anderson married Motley Crue drummer, Tommy Lee, after knowing him for just 96 hours. Their marriage lasted three whole years, and by Hollywood standards, that's not bad. But in 2006, Anderson's marriage to Kid Rock lasted a mere five months.
How about Lisa Marie Presley and Michael Jackson? Their ill fated marriage lasted a grand total of 18 months, and they were apart for at least a third of the time. The reasons behind it are still a bit fuzzy to most of us today.
One of the worst celebrity marriages has to be that of the former basketball star, Dennis Rodman and sex kitten/actress Carmen Electra. They married at the Little Chapel of of the Flowers in Las Vegas back in 1998, and initially Rodman filed for annulment after just nine days, stating that he was "not of sound mind." He was drunk.
The pair attempted a reconciliation, but ultimately ended up divorcing less than six months after their quickie wedding.
With so many disastrous Hollywood marriages, it isn't easy to pick the worst. What do you think? Which couple deserves the award for the worst marriage in Tinsel Town?
