Funeral for Whitney Houston set for Saturday in NJ

Whitney Houston's funeral will be held Saturday, Feb. 18 at the church where she sang in the choir as a girl. NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Whitney Houston's funeral will be held Saturday in the church where she first showcased her singing talents as a child.

The owner of the Whigham Funeral Home in Newark said Tuesday that the funeral will be held at noon at the New Hope Baptist Church in Newark.

The funeral home said that no wake would be held and that there would be no public memorial at Newark's Prudential Center, the sports arena that the family had discussed as a possible venue.

The funeral service will be by invitation only, Carolyn Whigham said, reflecting the family's desire to keep the memorial more personal.

"They have shared her for 30 some years with the city, with the state, with the world. This is their time now for their farewell," she said.

"The family thanks all the fans, the friends and the media, but this time is their private time," she said.

The 48-year-old Houston died Feb. 11 at a hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif., just hours before she was set to perform at producer Clive Davis' pre-Grammy Awards bash. Officials say she was underwater and apparently unconscious when she was pulled from a bathtub.

After an autopsy Sunday, authorities said there were no indications of foul play and no obvious signs of trauma on Houston. It could be weeks, however, before the coroner's office completes toxicology tests to establish the cause of death.

Los Angeles County coroner's assistant chief Ed Winter said bottles of prescription medicine were found in the room. He would not give details except to say: "There weren't a lot of prescription bottles. You probably have just as many prescription bottles in your medicine cabinet."

Her body was returned to New Jersey late Monday.

Houston was born in Newark and was raised in nearby East Orange. She began singing as a child at New Hope Baptist Church, where her mother, Grammy-winning gospel singer Cissy Houston, led the music program for many years. Her cousin singer Dionne Warwick also sang in its choir.

An impromptu memorial for Houston was held Sunday during a sadness-tinged Grammys, with Jennifer Hudson saluting her memory with a performance of "I Will Always Love You." Viewership for the awards show soared over last year by 50 percent, with about 40 million viewers tuning in to the program on CBS.

On Monday, mourners left flowers, balloons and candles for Houston at the wrought-iron fence around the tall brick church, which sits near the edge of an abandoned housing project near the train line leading to New York City.

"She was an inspiration to everybody," said Gregory Hanks, an actor who grew up in the neighborhood and who dropped off a bouquet. He saw Houston perform in New Jersey years ago.

"I grew up listening to her as a little boy, and to hear her sing, you knew she was special," he said.

A sensation from her first album, Houston was one of the world's best-selling artists from the mid-1980s to the late 1990s, turning out such hits as "I Wanna Dance With Somebody," ''How Will I Know," ''The Greatest Love of All" and "I Will Always Love You." But as she struggled with drugs, her majestic voice became raspy, and she couldn't hit the high notes.

Houston left behind one child, daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown, 18, from her marriage to singer Bobby Brown.

Have been reading so many comments on many sites since Whitney passed and have avoided making my own but cannot hold back anymore.
First of all, why oh why do so many have the need to blame, bash and be so rightish ???
She was a talented HUMAN BEING, with great gifts & Great burden. So many say, "why didn't anyone step in and help" ? Actually, MANY HELPED but the truth is NO ONE can "MAKE" another human well, or force recovery, take away addiction. She was a grown woman, an adult and it is almost impossable to even commit an adult much less keep them "straight" . NO ONE knows they will become a raging addict until it is too late. No one wants to be aa addict. Judge yourself people & let God pass His judgement on Whitney & YOU. I am sure, regardless of her demons she is now with God as she truly loved the Lord and excepted Him as her savior. Have you?
Lastly, God & only God decides when to bring a person home. I see this for Whitney as a very Blessed way of passing. No pain, she never knew she was dying and now all the demons are gone. I pray for her precious daughter & family as they are now the ones whom need comfort for the long road ahead. I know this as I lost my mom at the same age.

Very well said NKbrat, you speak the truth in a beautiful, non judgemental way, as we all should. RIP Whitney, and I pray for your family and your precious daughter.

Well said! Who are we to judge? Heaven's choir just got even better. Prayers to her family and may God comfort them.

I second that over and over and yes, Well said!!! I have nothing bad to say and I don't judge people because I have a daily work with myself for 12 months in a year. I am glad I had the opportunity to see her great gift and talents. My Prayers goes out to Bobbie Kristina Brown, Whitney's mother, and all the Family Members that God Comfort and Heal them for the journey ahead. What a Awesome Choir Member Heaven has now - Alone with my beautiful sister who passed last year - who was a song bird in her own right as well. RIP Whitney - "And I Will Always Love You"

I applaud the family for keeping her funeral private. This dog and pony show the media, who btw wrote her off along time ago, until she died under these circumstances, should not be allowed to invade an incredible private source of consolation for the grief and desolation that her family and close friends feel right now. I hope they feel comfort in the service, and find peace.

Wow that was the same thing Elvis said about his momma, and he died at the same age as her also............You better Get Things in order!

Was your mother an alcoholic and drug addict? There's a difference between someone dying of natural causes or from an accident. It was neither in Whitney Houston's case.

Did your mother have Bobby Brown get her hooked on drugs too??? A beautiful voice scilenced forever thanks to that piece of crap, Bobby Brown!!!

You know...the lady's dead. Is there really any call for the personal attacks on a person who is no longer around? Can't we just remember her as a great singer and leave it at that? She was a human being who made mistakes just like all of us do. I'm sure we wouldn't want to be remembered for our mistakes.

The first thing that crossed my mind when i heard was her daughter. I knew how close their relationship was because it reminded me of my daughter and myself. My daughter is my only child and i could not help but feel that she would have reacted the same way Bobbie Christina acted. I ask God to give Bobbie strength to get through the loss of her mother and hopefully one day she will pick up her mother's torch and continue her legacy.

I hope everyone respects their privacy and let them mourn in peace like they would want if it were their loved one.

Great decision by her family. A private goodbye away from all the hoopla and negativity. That may be how Whitney lived but a funeral is for the family not the deceased.

not to mention, the church is across the street from the downtown and dangerous train station and empty but huge abandoned projects. there are not enough cops in the NY/NJ area to secure this block. guess pru center was too expensive to rent. never liked her either.

Actually, the funeral is for the "living" not the deceased. I find their decision to not "share her", a most selfish and un-Christ like act.

        share her? how morbid!

Such a huge talent, and look at how she died, under water in the bathtub. So very sad.
