MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. (AP) — A private funeral for rap legend Heavy D will be held at a historic black Baptist church in a northern suburb of New York City.

Grace Baptist Church of Mount Vernon announced Friday that the funeral for Heavy D had been scheduled for Nov. 18.

The New York-born rapper died at a Los Angeles hospital Tuesday after collapsing outside his home. He was 44.

Dwight Arrington Myer was the titular member of Heavy D and the Boyz, which had hits with "Now That We Found Love," ''Who's the Man" and "Somebody for Me."

He was one of the genre's top stars in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Grace Baptist Church's website says its congregation was founded by five black women in 1888.

He was a rapper whose songs remained positive throughout his career and never talked about doing/selling drugs, cursing or degrading women.

Too bad he died young then. Rap desperately needs some good guys. There are plenty godless boogies doing it.

It's called "ying & yang", because there's YOU and then there's THEM! Just two sides of the same coin. Ur just dumb enough to think ur skin color makes you better max. Your comment is proof that you're not.

Max is 100% correct. go look at wshh and check the comments. nothing but racist idiots and the videos are filled with guns, drugs, talk about fighting "the man" and the cops and racist remarks about White people. Facts are facts.

Reading some of the disrespectful and ignorant comments, whether you liked him or not , whether you heard of him or not , doesn't make him a fat piece of filth, obviously you were raised by wolves...or worse...he didn't do hard core rap, how about some respect for someone who died too young and will be missed by friends and family.

cleo is truly a #$%$ Who said he ate his self to death. Typical of morons, you always assume way too much. Typical trash that thinks it's attractive for a grown woman to have the body of a 9 year old. By the way, is that a dbl. chin you have there?

Dwight was born in Jamaica, West Indies not New York as the press stated. He was a very positive and talented man. He would not dare disrespect women, because his Jamaican mother would not tolerate it. Dwight you were a joy and inspiration for so many--both younger and older than you. Thank God for giving you to us, even though it is for a short time. We love you, and will always remember that through your songs you made us very happy. Thank you Dwight. R.I.P.

Let's all have some respect and class at a time like this. He sounded like a nice man. We all have our weaknesses. His family must be really sad.

Wow pretty sad how many rude and disrespectful comments are on here! Have some respect and GROW UP! How would you like it if someone was talking about your loved one like that?
      RIP Heavy D!

I think most of the haters on here are too young (or ignorant) to realize that rap originally was a vital and innovative new music form (with a nod to Jamaican toasting, of course). It bore little similarity to the bloated, commercialized kiddy-pap that's taken over the genre.

It is a terrible thing when we lose someone who was positive, a gentleman, a class act, a good father, a positive black man. This society needs so much to have more men like him of any color, to live in Living Color and for us to remember when it was safe to walk down the street. This man, just like MJ was ready for his comeback and it was in the works. So sad that he is gone for us to enjoy any longer. He deserves our RESPECT. He was happy and made RAP/Hip Hop enjoyable and entertaining and he was New Jack Swing all day and all night. I will say RIP brother because we are all brothers and sisters. One love

RIP Heavy D. I knew he was an actor as well as a rapper. I know he wil be missed. Even though he was a big man he was still able to work a stage. His memories as well as his song will last forever.
