Should We Finally Stop Trying to Make a Role Model of Miley Cyrus?

    Miley Cyrus

It seems that every other day "Hannah Montana" star Miley Cyrus pops up in the news for offending people. In the past, Disney hasn't been too fond of her more provocative behavior. But some forget that she is now legally an adult. Although we'll continue to judge every thing she does in "private", (that's what we do), perhaps we're going a little overboard with this role model stuff. She might do well with a lesson or two in being ladylike. But Miley happens to think she's a decent role model. Her "cakey" behavior, as raunchy and repulsive as it is to many---isn't necessarily a representation of who she is as a person.

    Where it all begins…

Young women brought up to emulate gyrating, over-sexualized "role models" will most certainly do so, especially if they're given no other positive examples to follow. Mom may not be running out the door in midriff shirts, leggings and clear heels. But presenting a legit example of a respectable young woman should be something that precedes any flippant images to which they're exposed. However, this is often commentary that complaining audiences don't want to hear.

    What Sayeth, the Parental Units?

We don't really want to see Miley Cyrus posing provocatively with a penis-shaped birthday cake. (Well, some of us don't.) But for that matter, we don't really want to see anyone posed with a phallic dessert. It's just icky. Where are Miley's parents in all this, you say? They've come under fire themselves for introducing a bit of messiness into the family. Rumors of infidelity, tentative divorce filings and so on…have become minor distractions from Hannah Montana's apparent alter ego. Do her parents know that she's taking naughty snapshots? Maybe, maybe not.

Is what she did that bad?

Girls just wanna have fun, some of you will also say. Cyrus isn't a candidate for "Teen Mom." And though she's been caught with a questionable substance, she's never been arrested for crashing into something (or someone) while under the influence. (Ok, so that one was a stretch.) In any case, the deeper issue perhaps resides with what she's been brought us to believe is acceptable. All jokes aside, Billy Ray and Tish haven't done a horrible job. But for all intents and purposes, some of their "soggy" boundaries just don't sit well with the rest of the world. Has Miley committed a cardinal sin by posing with raunchy desserts? And if so, what else is the Disney star really doing behind closed doors? For now, some of these questions will go unanswered---just as they often are in the real world.

thats right,I never look up to other people to be my role model.my role model have always been my parents and as long as they carry theirselves with dignity I will always respect them, because they are the best thing in my life and they say that I am the best thing in their life.So with loving parents like them who need others to become their role model,People look for others to raise their children when it all begin at home.what happen to common sense?

American's crack me up...how about giving your kids something to stand for so they won't fall for anything? If kids have a firm moral foundation, they can like Miley and Rihanna and whomever else for their music or acting or fashion sense (to a reasonable point as dictated by said moral foundation), and then close the door on that person because they're their own person. I'm so sick of people ragging on Miley and Britney and all the so called "role-models" okay, so when they were young they represented values like fresh, positive, talented, wholesome, etc, those were good qualities that a daughter (or son) could emulate, but newsflash, these kids grow up and seek their own lives and should be allowed to make and learn from their mistakes...I'm sure the Disney machine churns out enough of these age appropriate "role models" to compensate for when one "bites the dust" i.e becomes an adult. For Pete's sake do your jobs as parents, teach your kids that these celebs who are people just like they are, aren't the be all and end all and the get off Miley's and the other's cases.

exactly! Everybody who is 'offended' by her actions needs to step back and think about her age and what you did as a teenager. I guarantee you you were not perfect, flawless and responsible when you were 18. You would have just graduated high school for goodness sake. Why is she expected to be some sort of divine picture of perfection? Is it not common knowledge that she is human? Some people are so delusional.

        I know right! It's ridiculous!

I agree with all of you. People act as though she is a horrible person. EVERYBODY, at one time our another whether in their 20's, 30's 40's and above has done something. Nobody is perfect and should not be expected to be.

Apparently this excuse that she is a role model is a popular phrase dribbling out of ignorant parents' mouths everywhere. She only becomes a child's role model if the parent allows her to. End of story.

When I was 18-19 I was a wild child. She may be a wild ADULT now, but she sure is a talented person and performer and its sad that this is the focus of her life, when in reality she works her butt off every day of the week, but out come a few party pictures and 'omg that's all she does all day'. SHE DIDN'T BECOME A CELEB AT 10 BY PARTYING HER WAY THERE. Stop being jealous that your own children don't have as much drive as she does.

I smoked pot when I was 18. My mother told me she would rather that than drinking alcohol. I wasn't a horrible person, why is Miley? ...I got a full-tuition scholarship, graduated from college, and I'm getting married now 5 years later. I think parents have this delusion that their children are perfect angels that will never become a hormone-infused teenager that goes to a party once in a while. GET A GRIP AND STOP ACTING LIKE CELEBRITIES CAME INTO YOUR HOUSE AND RAISED YOUR CHILDREN! If they screw up, take responsibility as an ADULT to admit your mistakes as a PARENT and fix them. Don't sit here and point the finger.

Let's Keep It Real, Real: Miley Cirus & the words Role Model do not need to be in the same sentence!
    • Rocky  •  3 months ago
Of course you should. She is no role model for any kid.

Since when was Miley ever considered a role model anyway, when she was 12? Not saying she won't ever "grow up" since she's still young yet, but I sure hope she doesn't totally go the train wreck route like Lohan. Sad though nonetheless.

Ok. Miley Cyrus is a grown woman now and not a little girl. She is not going to be into the things she was once in as she was in Hanna Montana. She is a woman, she is at the dating age, she is GROWING UP. It really cracks me up when child stars finally become of age and begin acting like adults people have a problem with it, rather than take the time to teach their kids that first and foremost, the role model should be the parents, the teachers, the older siblings. If parents take the time to teach that to kids and not cater to all the hype of the celebrity icons then maybe things would go the way they should. Maybe I sound wrong, I'm not sure, but if I am wrong I apologize. Does anyone agree or disagree?

It was the Hollywood machine that tried to make her this teeny bopper, clean star. It wasn't who she really was, but she had the play the part for a while to make the dough. Now that she is older and has money, she is doing what she wants. Except, I'm certain there are still things the public doesn't know about her and won't or else it could make her career get worse.

Everyone acts as if they wouldn't of done what she has done. She is learning from her mistakes and she is making more mistakes then learns like everyone else in the world. Why is it anyone's business on how and why she is how she is. It's nooner buisness. Let her live and learn. Yeah she was a role model and hopefully nobodies little kids learned the mistakes and is beginning them but she has the right to do what she wants with her life. Billy ray may be upset but that's his daughter so he has the rights to be.your not her and you don't know how it is to be her.
I'm not sticking up for her because I'm disappointed but it's not my buisness. I hope she realizes and is back to normal but no one will ever know. Let her be! She's still amazing at hat she does. And she doesn't have to be perfect. Not one after is perfect or singer

My role models were my parents, Princess Diana ( cause she over came that hell, formally called Prince Charles & mommy dearest.), Stephen King and other real people.

uh role model? I think not. Her Mom was a rock groupie and not a good mother. Miley smokes weed and cigarettes and has nasty looking jail tatts all over her now. EWWWWW!
      • heythere 3 months ago
Yay you just stated something everybody forgot about! MILEY'S role model, let it sink in for a few minutes, was HER MOTHER. If you ask me, she's turned out pretty well for a teenager that is self-sufficient that has millions of dollars, and was raised by that mother. She's not a teen mom, she's still got a job (more than I can say for even her own parents), and she hasn't even been arrested for anything. OOOOH she has a few tattoos....so does Cher. And the mayor of L.A. And JFK. And FDR. And Winston Churchill. Reality check please.

Hannah Montana was then and this is now.
Parents need to let their children know that it was a made up show and just like the Barbie doll, it has
its place. Stop trying to make Miley Cyrus continue
to be Hannah Montana. The show is over and the
directors should have ended the show with Hannah
going to the moon or something.

I believe it was healthy for every ten year old girl in America watching this 17 year old girl in short shorts spreading her legs, leaping around on stage with her #$%$ hanging out. Who the hell comes up with these moronic questions?

OMG, kindly stop writing such pointless articles. Stop shoving those artists down our throats who have not been in the limelight for a while. Majority of parents and kids stopped seeing her as a role model when her show ended. I do not even hear her Hannah Montana songs being played anywhere. I guess people just stopped caring about her. Lets leave it that way.

Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus can only be a role model if your child is tought she is one......Or better Yet Just Turn On The Disney Channel. and within a few Hours your Daughter will have all new 2012 Role Models....but most importantly remember a True role model shloud be someone in reality to be the most affective in that litttle girls LIFE!
