Elizabeth Banks surprised many of her fans when she announced the arrival of her new son, Felix. On March 30, 2011 the actress posted on her blog that she became the mother to a newborn via a surrogate mother after struggling for years to become pregnant.
The 37-year-old said that the journey led her and her husband, Max Handelman, to gestational surrogacy. She said, "We make a baby cake and bake it in another woman's oven," and she added that meeting the woman who became her carrier and the birth of her baby boy were "two miracles."
In the February issue of Lucky magazine, Banks remarked, "It was a womb issue for me. Embryos wouldn't implant. It's a big leap, inviting this person into your life to do this amazing, important thing for you. And it's hard losing that kind of control. But our surrogate is so extraordinary, and she's still in our lives. She like an auntie."
The star of the "Hunger Games," said the new addition to her family was a long time coming. Banks has had a amazing long-lasting relationship with her husband, falling "madly in love" at just 18 years old.
The gorgeous blonde is currently working on a new Fox television show called, "Dave's Dead." Banks and her husband sold the show to the network and will be its executive producers. The comedy is being billed as "Shaun of the Dead" meets " My Name is Earl."
The "Our Idiot Brother," actress has been quite the busy new mom as she also has a role in the highly-anticipated " Hunger Games" trilogy.
Banks is by no means the first Hollywood star to use a surrogate. About two and a half years ago, actress Sarah Jessica Parker and her husband, actor Matthew Broderick, became the parents of twin daughters, Marion Loretta Elwell Broderick and Tabitha Hodge Broderick, on June 22, 2009. The couple wanted to have another baby after their son was born back in 2002, but were unable to conceive naturally.
The 46-year-old "Sex and the City" star said the entire family was overjoyed and the birth would not have been possible if it wasn't for the generosity of the surrogate.
Nicole Kidman and her sexy country music star husband, Keith Urban, welcomed Faith Margaret Kidman Urban to the family on December 28, 2010. The couple's first daughter, Sunday Rose, was born in 2008, and Kidman's pregnancy was out in the spotlight. This time, their impending newborn was kept a secret, and her arrival may have shocked more than a few.
A rep for the 44 year-old actress said that Faith Margaret was "born through a gestational carrier at Nashville's Centennial Womens Hospital," and in the couple's statement to Access Hollywood, they said, "Our family is truly blessed, and just so thankful, to have been given the gift of baby Faith Margaret. No words can adequately convey the incredible gratitude that we feel for everyone who was so supportive throughout this process, in particular our gestational carrier."
