Eddie Murphy is yet another victim of the celebrity death hoax, and has miraculously arisen from the dead after a report by MediaFetcher.com stated he'd died in a snowboarding accident. Fortunately, the 50-year-old comedian is very much alive as confirmed by TMZ.
Even more bizarre, is that a similar story was reported a little over two years ago, when the website Global Associated News said Murphy was snowboarding in Switzerland and died in a freak accident after he ran into a tree at a rate of high speed. You'd think when starting a new hoax, they could at least be a little more creative. We think most people are beginning to catch on to this ridiculous trend and do some due diligence before believing the false reports.
In today's report the only detail that changed was the date of death, stating that he died early on Friday, February 3, 2012. The stories all have a disclaimer in very small print at the bottom reading, that th e stories are 100% fake and intended "for the purpose of entertainment."
How is this entertaining? We think most of us find these morbid rumors in extremely poor taste.
Just this past week there have been two similar stories. The latest involved country superstar Reba McEntire when it was reported on Monday that the stunning redhead was the victim of a horrendous fall as she was climbing a mountain in Austria.
Global Media News, once again, was the originator of these horrid false rumors causing fans of the 56-year-old to flood the internet with desperate pleas hoping that the story was fake. Of course, it was, but can you imagine the mental anguish that the entertainer's friends and family felt until they learned the truth?
Just last weekend, the iconic singer Cher was the focus of the fake death story. The long time crooner had a sense of humor about it though, saying that she might have to write a song to commemorate the news.
She tweeted, " Well here I am Tweeting from the HereAfter! It's very blue up here & thank God they gave me a view of the sea, palm trees & a Balinese house... Lovelies. I'm not going anywhere till i finish this fkng (sic) album! The only RIP I know how 2 (sic) do is 'Rip it up! Kick a** & take no prisoners!... Just had great idea... I'm going to ask (my songwriter) to write a song 4 (sic) album! 'RIP'."
Before she made it known to the world that she was still around, reality star Kim Kardashian sent out a panicked tweet, "Did I just hear Cher has passed away? Is this real? OMG (oh my God)... I hope this is a Twitter joke and not true. I don't see it on the news anywhere. I'm praying its (sic) not true..."
No matter who the joke is on, we just don't find these funny at all. What do you think?
